Wimereux Beach
Golden sands, big skies, and the Channel at your feet

About
Plage Wimereux stretches roughly 1,500 metres along the Côte d'Opale in Pas-de-Calais, where golden sand meets the open blue of the English Channel under wide northern skies. A classic seawall promenade runs the length of the beach, giving the whole place a relaxed, unhurried feel that families keep coming back for. The beach holds Blue Flag certification — a reliable signal of water quality and well-managed facilities. Visitor numbers stay moderate, so you'll rarely feel hemmed in, though summer weekends do draw a steady flow of daytrippers from nearby Boulogne-sur-Mer. The setting is honest northern France: bracing, beautiful, and genuinely characterful.
How to get there
Plage Wimereux sits right on the doorstep of Wimereux village — a five-minute walk from the town centre, or a three-minute drive. Parking is a mix of free and paid spaces near the beach; no specific app or pay system is documented, so check local signage on arrival. There is no entry fee to access the beach itself. The promenade and beach access are fully accessible.
Who it's for
For couples
The promenade walk at dusk, with the blue Channel stretching west and the village lights coming on behind you, is quietly romantic without requiring any effort. Pair it with a panoramic dinner at La Dérive, 500 metres along the seafront.
For families
Blue Flag status means reliable water quality, and the accessible promenade makes it easy to manage with pushchairs or young children. When the beach loses its appeal, Nausicaá's aquarium is only four kilometres away — a genuine half-day activity for kids of any age.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Plage Wimereux is a genuinely appealing northern French beach — but safety comes first, and the warnings here are serious. Strong currents, dangerous tides, and rockfall zones in the north mean you must swim only in supervised areas and stay alert to the sea at all times. Get that right, and what you have is 1,500 metres of golden sand, a handsome promenade, Blue Flag water quality, and easy access to some of the best coastal scenery on the Côte d'Opale. It's not a beach for lounging in guaranteed sunshine — the northern light is changeable and the Channel keeps you honest. But for families who want character over convenience, and for anyone who finds flat, manicured resort beaches a little dull, Wimereux delivers something more real. Come in July or August, stay at Hotel Atlantic, and walk to Cap Gris-Nez on a clear day.
What to do
Just 2.1 kilometres away, La Pointe aux Oies is a rewarding coastal walk with strong birdlife interest. A short drive north brings you to Cap Gris-Nez, where a lighthouse crowns dramatic cliffs above the Channel — on a clear day you can make out the White Cliffs of Dover. History lovers should time a visit to Fort d'Ambleteuse, a 17th-century Vauban sea fort about four kilometres away that becomes accessible on foot at low tide. Nausicaá, one of Europe's largest aquariums, is also just four kilometres away in Boulogne-sur-Mer — a solid wet-weather option for families.
The seawall promenade shot looking south captures the full arc of golden sand against the blue Channel — best in the hour after sunrise before visitors arrive.
The colourful beach huts and promenade architecture photograph well from beach level at low tide. For a wider frame, the view from the southern end of the beach looking back towards Wimereux village puts the coastline in context.
Where to eat
Cap Nord is the closest option, just 100 metres from the beach — handy for a quick stop before or after your visit. La Dérive on the Digue de Wimereux is a panoramic restaurant facing the sea, about 500 metres away, and worth it for the view alone. Further into Boulogne-sur-Mer, Restaurant Brasserie Chez Jules has built a strong local following with nearly 3,750 reviews.
Where to stay
Hotel Atlantic sits just 100 metres from the beach and carries a 4.6-star rating across more than 860 reviews — the obvious first choice for a seafront stay. If you'd rather be in Boulogne-sur-Mer, the B&B HOTEL Boulogne-sur-Mer Centre Les Ports is a practical option about 5.4 kilometres away. For a camping experience, Camping l'Escale scores 4.5 stars and is under five kilometres from the beach.
Photography
The seawall promenade gives you an elevated, unobstructed line along the full length of the beach — shoot early morning when the golden sand is still empty and the blue Channel light is at its softest. For wider coastal drama, the view back towards the village from the southern end of the beach frames the promenade architecture against open sky.
Good to know
Swimming carries real risk here — tides and currents are strong, and you must only enter the water in supervised zones. The northern section of the beach is off-limits for swimming due to frequent rockfalls: do not enter the water there, regardless of conditions. Always check tide times before you go, and never turn your back on the sea. The best months to visit are June through September; November to February brings cold water, rough seas, and very short days.
