Belmar BeachUnited States Beach Guide
White sand, blue water, and serious Jersey Shore energy

About
Belmar Beach sits on the New Jersey Shore, a lively stretch of white sand facing the open blue Atlantic on Shark River Island. The boardwalk hums with energy, the surf rolls in with purpose, and the young-leaning visitors keeps the atmosphere upbeat from morning to last light. It's a classic Mid-Atlantic shore experience — badge-required, marina-adjacent, and unapologetically social. The best months to visit are June through September, when the temperate Northern Hemisphere climate delivers warm days and the full beach season kicks into gear.
How to get there
From New York Penn Station, NJ Transit trains run hourly and reach Belmar in around 100 minutes — one of the easiest shore runs from the city. A shuttle connects Belmar Rail Station to the beach Thursday through Sunday. Parking is available in a mix of paid and free spots: free on side streets and at the NJ Transit train station, while paid spaces along Ocean Avenue, Silver Lake, North Blvd, and the Marina are managed via the ParkMobile app at $2.00 per hour. A daily beach badge costs $12, waived for children 13 and under, active military members and their families, Gold Star Family members, and United States veterans.
Who it's for
For couples
A boardwalk evening stroll with the Atlantic behind you and dinner at Klein's Fish Market or Flames nearby makes for an easy, low-effort date on the Shore. The marina backdrop gives Belmar a slightly more textured feel than a plain beach strip.
For families
Children 13 and under get in free, which takes the sting out of a family day at the beach. Stick close to lifeguard zones given the rip current risk, and note that sandbars make wading areas unpredictable — always check depth before letting kids splash around.
Our take
Rip currents are real here — unpredictable, and capable of catching even confident swimmers off guard. Check with a lifeguard every single time before you enter the water, and never dive without probing the depth first given the shifting sandbars. Once you've got the safety side sorted, Belmar delivers a genuinely fun, lively Jersey Shore day: good surf, a proper boardwalk, a marina, and easy train access from New York Penn Station in about 100 minutes. The young-leaning energy is part of the deal — if you want quiet, this isn't your beach. But if you want the full Mid-Atlantic shore experience with white sand, blue water, and a cold slice nearby, Belmar earns its place on the list.
What to do
The surf is the main draw. If you want a taste of classic Jersey Shore kitsch, Madame Marie's fortune-telling parlor is about 4.6 km up the coast. For something more theatrical, Jenkinson's XD Dark Ride is roughly 10 km away and makes a solid rainy-day or evening detour. The marina adds a nautical backdrop that sets Belmar apart from a plain stretch of sand.
The boardwalk framing the blue Atlantic is your hero shot — best captured in the soft light just after sunrise before the beach fills up.
The marina offers a different angle, with boats and open water giving Belmar a more layered, less generic Shore aesthetic. White sand foreground against the deep blue water works well in mid-morning light before the sun gets too harsh overhead.
Where to eat
Klein's Fish Market & Waterside Cafe, just 1.1 km away, is the obvious call for seafood. Federico's handles your pizza fix at the same distance, and Don's Pizza offers another solid slice option about 1.2 km out. If you're after something heartier, Flames steakhouse is also within 1.2 km — useful to know after a long day in the sun.
Where to stay
Accommodation options close to the beach are limited in the verified listings — the nearest noted hotel is an Oyo property about 6.7 km from the shore. Many visitors base themselves in the village of Belmar itself, which puts the train station and beach within easy reach.
Photography
The boardwalk at golden hour gives you the classic Jersey Shore silhouette shot — warm light, the blue Atlantic behind, and the marina adding depth to the frame. Early morning is your best window for clean white sand and calm blue water before the day's visitors arrive.
Good to know
Rip currents at Belmar are unpredictable and the waves can be dangerous — always check with a lifeguard before entering the water, no exceptions. Sandbars shift constantly, so never dive headfirst without first checking the depth; the bottom can be far shallower than it looks.
