Zanpa Beach
White sand, lighthouse views, and two beaches in one

About
Zanpa Beach stretches roughly a kilometre of white sand along Okinawa's west coast, framed by the coral limestone cape that gives it its name. The water runs turquoise and the beach splits naturally into two personalities: a surf-friendly zone on the cape-facing side and calmer, shallower water ideal for families on the sheltered stretch. The Cape Zanpa Lighthouse stands just 200 metres away, its white tower rising above the coral bluffs and doubling as the beach's most recognisable landmark. Managed facilities, a long unbroken shoreline, and easy road access make this one of the most practical beaches on the main island. Swimming hours run 09:00–18:00 during the swimming season.
How to get there
From Naha, drive roughly 60 minutes north along the west coast; from Okinawa City, allow about 40 minutes. A large free car park sits at the cape — it fills quickly on summer weekends, so arrive early. No entry fee is charged to access the beach itself.
Who it's for
For couples
The lighthouse walk at dusk, with the coral cape glowing and the East China Sea stretching west, is as good a setting as Okinawa's main island offers for a quiet evening away from the resort strip.
For families
The calm zone offers safe, shallow turquoise water during supervised swimming hours (09:00–18:00), free parking, and managed facilities — the practical checklist for a family day out is essentially ticked before you unpack the towels.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Zanpa earns its reputation honestly: a long white-sand beach, a working lighthouse you can walk to, and two distinct water characters in one stretch. The rip currents on the cape side are real and must be taken seriously — stay inside the designated swimming zones, full stop. June is the sweet spot: the water is warm, the typhoon risk is lower than July through September, and you'll find the beach noticeably less packed than peak summer. The free parking and managed facilities make it unusually easy for a beach of this quality. It's not a secret, and it doesn't pretend to be — but it delivers.
What to do
The Cape Zanpa Lighthouse is a two-minute walk from the sand and delivers panoramic East China Sea views from its coral limestone perch — worth every step. About 5 kilometres south, Ryukyu Mura is an open-air museum of traditional Ryukyuan village life and crafts, a solid half-day detour if you want cultural context for the islands. Divers and snorkellers with ambition should note that Cape Maeda's famous Blue Cave sea cavern is 15 kilometres down the coast — a separate trip, but an easy one to bolt on.
The classic shot is the white lighthouse framed against turquoise water from the sand's northern end — go before 09:00 for clean light and no one in frame.
The coral limestone bluffs of the cape itself make a dramatic foreground for wide-angle sea shots, particularly in the hour before sunset when the rock takes on a warm amber tone.
Where to eat
Kokopelli Pizza and Pizzeria da ENZO both serve pizza within 3–6 kilometres of the beach, handy for a post-swim meal. For something different, Nukumi Kitchen brings Mexican flavours to the area at around 3 kilometres away, and Luire offers Italian and French options at the same distance. There's a casual buffet option 2.3 kilometres from the beach if you're feeding a group.
Where to stay
Hiyori Ocean Resort Okinawa and Coral Place Onna both sit around 9 kilometres from the beach and are the closest options for staying near Zanpa. If you don't mind a longer drive, Shogun Inn at 13 kilometres and Okinawa City Hotel at 14 kilometres round out the choices.
Photography
The lighthouse-over-white-sand composition is best shot in the early morning when the light is soft and the car park hasn't filled — position yourself at the water's edge looking north toward the cape. Sunset from the limestone bluffs near the lighthouse turns the turquoise water gold and gives you the full west-coast panorama without a single building in frame.
Good to know
Swim only inside the designated zones — rip currents run on the cape-facing side and have real force, so ignoring the flags is not a calculated risk, it's a dangerous one. Surfing is separated from the swimming zone by rule, and that separation is enforced; respect it. Typhoon season (July through September) can bring rough seas with little warning, and peak visitor numbers arrive in those same months — both good reasons to plan your visit in June instead. Dogs are not permitted in the swimming areas.
