Sao Beach
Powdery white sand, turquoise water, postcard perfection

About
Bãi Sao sits on the southeast coast of Phú Quốc island, curving along the Gulf of Thailand in a postcard-famous arc that earns every photograph taken of it. The sand is powdery white underfoot, the water a clear turquoise that stays shallow and calm close to shore — ideal for wading in without a second thought. A forested hill rises behind the beach, framing the scene and providing pockets of natural shade. The vibe here is relaxed rather than resort-polished, though the beach draws a steady stream of visitors, especially on weekends and public holidays.
How to get there
Bãi Sao is easy to reach by car — roughly 10 minutes from An Thới town to the south, or about 35 minutes from Dương Đông in the north. Ferry connections are also available, making it accessible from the wider An Thới archipelago. Paid parking is available on-site; no specific payment system is documented, so carry cash to be safe. There is no entry fee to the beach itself.
Who it's for
For couples
The relaxed pace, postcard arc of white sand, and calm turquoise water make Bãi Sao a natural choice for couples — arrive early morning for a near-private stretch of beach before the day visitors arrive.
For families
Shallow, calm water and safe swimming conditions make this one of Phú Quốc's most family-friendly beaches; young children can wade comfortably, and sunbed rentals mean parents can settle in for the day.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Bãi Sao is safe to swim and genuinely beautiful — the white sand and turquoise water live up to the photographs. That said, be honest with yourself about timing: mid-day on a weekend or public holiday, this beach is packed, and the experience is a different one entirely. The southwest monsoon (May–October) reduces water clarity and picks up wave action, so the dry season window from November to April is when the beach is at its best. Jellyfish are a real concern during summer months — if you're visiting between May and October, check conditions before entering the water. Get here before 9am, claim your spot, and you'll have one of southern Vietnam's finest stretches of sand at something close to its best.
What to do
Just 4km away, the Hòn Thơm Cable Car is one of the world's longest non-stop cable car rides, connecting An Thới to Hòn Thơm island — a worthwhile half-day side trip. An Thới Port, only 3km from the beach, is the main southern ferry hub and a gateway to the An Thới archipelago islands. History-minded visitors can head 5km north to the Phú Quốc Prison Museum, a sobering and well-documented look at the Vietnam War period.
The full arc of the beach is best captured from the low hillside at the southern end, framing the white sand and turquoise water in one sweep.
At water level, shoot looking back toward the forested hill backdrop for that classic Bãi Sao postcard composition. Early morning light before 8am gives clean, shadow-free colour with minimal visitors in frame.
Where to eat
Nhà Hàng Chez Dugong is the closest dining option, just 0.4km from the beach — a convenient stop before or after a swim. For something more casual, Coco Beach House at 2.1km offers a relaxed setting, while Draft Beer Bai Khem, 2.4km away, is a solid choice for an afternoon drink. If you want Vietnamese staples, Com Ga 47 is 1.3km away.
Where to stay
Tây Tiến Bungalow, 2.1km from the beach, suits travellers after a low-key, local-style stay. For a luxury option, the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa is 2.8km away and one of the island's most celebrated resort properties. La Festa Phu Quoc, Curio Collection by Hilton, and Positano 59 are both around 4.4km out for mid-to-upper-range alternatives.
Photography
The best shots come from the southern end of the arc at sunrise, when the turquoise water catches the early light against the powdery white sand and forested hill backdrop — almost no one is there yet. Late afternoon, when the sun drops toward the hills, gives warm golden tones across the full curve of the beach.
Good to know
Respect the no-littering rule — keep the sand clean and take your rubbish with you. Sunbeds are available to rent from beach operators along the shore. Arrive before 9am or after 3pm on weekends and public holidays — the beach gets seriously packed mid-day and the experience suffers. Watch out for persistent water vendors and sunbed operators, and be aware that jellyfish can appear in the water during the summer months (May–October).
