Avalon Beach
White sand, Casino backdrop, ferry-fresh California island vibes

About
Avalon Beach sits along the harbor front of Avalon, Catalina Island — a compact stretch of white sand framed by crystal-clear water and the unmistakable dome of the 1929 Avalon Casino rising behind it. Pleasure craft bob in the mooring field just offshore, and the ferry terminal sits close enough that you can watch day-trippers stream in while you're already settled on the sand. The waterfront promenade runs the full length of the beach, giving the whole scene a lively, almost Mediterranean feel without the Mediterranean flight. It's a town beach in the truest sense: shops, restaurants, and hotels are steps away, and the water — when boat traffic is light — shimmers with that crystal clarity Catalina is known for. Compact but full of character, it punches well above its modest size.
How to get there
Avalon Beach is reachable only by sea — there is no road connection to the California mainland. Ferries run daily from San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point, with a crossing of roughly 75 minutes; boat charters from the Southern California mainland take around 90 minutes. Once on the island, golf carts and bicycles are available for hire in Avalon — no private vehicles operate here, so there is no parking of any kind to worry about.
Who it's for
For couples
The promenade walk at dusk, with the Casino dome lit up and pleasure craft reflected in the harbor water, gives Avalon Beach a genuinely romantic edge that's hard to manufacture — book a room at Snug Harbor Inn and you're steps from all of it.
For families
Easy flat sand near the waterline, a paved promenade for strollers, and a full strip of family-friendly restaurants within 0.2 km make logistics simple — just note that dogs aren't allowed and alcohol is off the table on the beach itself, which actually keeps the atmosphere calm for kids.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Avalon Beach is a genuinely enjoyable day-trip destination — easy to reach by ferry, beautiful in the right conditions, and surrounded by good food and real history. The Casino backdrop and crystal-clear harbor water make it one of the more photogenic town beaches in Southern California. That said, go in with clear eyes: July and August bring extreme visitor numbers and noticeably murky water from boat traffic, so the experience you see in photos is a June or September experience. Boat wake near the mooring field is a real hazard for swimmers — stay aware of your surroundings in the water. Hit it on a calm weekday in early summer and it delivers; hit it on a holiday weekend in August and you'll be fighting for a patch of white sand. Plan accordingly.
What to do
The Avalon Casino, just 0.3 km along the waterfront, is the island's architectural centrepiece — an Art Deco circular ballroom and movie theater that's worth a look even if you don't go inside. History buffs should head to the Catalina Island Museum (0.4 km) for its coverage of Native Chumash heritage and the island's surprising Hollywood connections. Divers and snorkelers can make for Avalon Dive Park, only 0.4 km away, while those wanting to stretch their legs further can visit the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden at 2.5 km, set among Catalina's endemic plant species.
Frame the Avalon Casino dome over the mooring field from the promenade's eastern end — it's the definitive postcard composition and works best in the soft light of early morning.
The ferry terminal approach also delivers a striking wide shot: white sand in the foreground, crystal-clear harbor water mid-frame, and the hillside town stacked behind.
Where to eat
Bluewater Avalon and Cafe Metropole are both within 0.2 km and consistently well-reviewed — solid choices for a post-swim meal with harbor views. Catalina Island Brew House (0.2 km) is the pick if you want something casual with local character, while Maggie's Blue Rose and Naughty Fox round out a walkable dining strip that means you'll never have to go far for food.
Where to stay
Hotel Metropole and Hotel Bellanca are the closest options, both within 0.2 km of the beach and well-placed for an early morning dip before the day-trippers arrive. Snug Harbor Inn offers a quieter boutique feel at the same distance, while Pavillon Hotel and Hotel Catalina sit just 0.3 km away for anyone who wants a touch more breathing room.
Photography
The classic shot is from the promenade looking back toward the Casino dome with the mooring field and crystal-clear water in the foreground — golden hour light from the west hits the Art Deco facade beautifully. Arrive early morning for the white sand at its cleanest and the harbor at its calmest, before ferry arrivals shift the scene.
Good to know
No dogs are permitted on Avalon beaches, so leave four-legged companions at home. Alcohol on the public beach is also prohibited — save the drinks for the waterfront restaurants. Stay clear of the mooring zone boundaries when swimming; boat wake near the mooring field is a genuine hazard. Water clarity can drop noticeably from boat traffic during peak summer, and the beach becomes extremely packed from Memorial Day through Labor Day — if you can, visit in June or after early September.
