East Beach
Santa Barbara's lively white-sand stretch on the California coast

About
East Beach runs along Cabrillo Boulevard in Santa Barbara, California, offering a wide sweep of white sand against blue Pacific water. The vibe here is lively — volleyball courts fill up fast, the bike path hums with cyclists, and families stake out their patches early. Stroll east and you'll find yourself within easy reach of the historic wharf. It's a city beach in the truest sense: polished, accessible, and rarely quiet on a summer afternoon.
How to get there
East Beach is easy to reach from downtown Santa Barbara by car, public transport, bike, or on foot — all routes are straightforward and frequent. Several large paved parking lots line Cabrillo Boulevard, with limited free street parking also available; paid lots typically run around $2 per hour. There is no entry fee to the beach itself.
Who it's for
For couples
A morning bike ride along the Cabrillo Boulevard path followed by a late lunch at one of the nearby restaurants makes for an easy, unhurried day out together.
For families
The safe swimming conditions, volleyball courts, and flat bike path give families plenty to work with, and the wharf access adds a natural excursion for kids who want to explore beyond the sand.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
East Beach is Santa Barbara's most accessible and animated stretch of sand — white, wide, and genuinely easy to reach from downtown by almost any means. Swimming is safe in the main open sections, which puts it ahead of many California beaches where the fine print is more complicated. The one real caveat: stay out of the water near creek mouths and for three days after rain. Beyond that, this is a well-run city beach that delivers on its promise — volleyball, bikes, wharf views, and a string of decent restaurants within walking distance. Best visited June through September when the Northern Hemisphere temperate climate is at its most reliable. Come early on summer weekends or accept that you'll be sharing the sand.
What to do
Black Swan, about 1km away, is worth checking out for a change of pace after the beach. Flamingos and Capybara, both around 1.1km from the sand, round out the nearby activity options for when you're ready to step off the beach. The wharf access tagged to East Beach also makes a natural afternoon extension — walk it for views back over the bay.
The white sand framed against blue Pacific water shoots well from the water's edge at golden hour, especially looking toward the wharf.
The volleyball courts mid-beach give you action and color in a single frame. The Cabrillo Boulevard bike path, with the beach as a backdrop, is a clean, graphic shot that captures the city-beach character of the place.
Where to eat
Flor de Maiz and Oku are both about 1.1km from the beach and make solid post-swim options. Basil's is a short trip at 1.9km, while Sushi Tyme and Bettina — a pizza spot — sit a little further out at 2.2km and 2.4km respectively.
Where to stay
Montecito Inn is the closest listed option at 3.4km, a well-regarded property for those who want comfort near the beach. If you're after something further afield, Laurel Springs Lodge sits about 15km out.
Photography
The white sand and blue water photograph best in the soft light of early morning, before the beach fills up and the midday glare flattens the scene. The volleyball courts and bike path make for lively, characterful shots later in the day — frame toward the wharf for a classic Santa Barbara backdrop.
Good to know
Swim in the main open-water sections and you'll be fine — East Beach is rated safe for swimming. That said, avoid the water near creek mouths, any areas where animals congregate, and for up to three days after rain events that produce runoff, as water quality can drop sharply. The volleyball courts and bike path get busy fast on summer weekends, so arrive early if you want space. Naturism is not permitted here.
