Trou aux Biches Beach
Crystal lagoon, white sand, and casuarina shade on Mauritius's north coast

About
Trou aux Biches stretches roughly 1,200 metres along a gentle crescent bay on the north coast of Mauritius, where white sand meets a crystal-clear, shallow lagoon with a sandy bottom. Mature casuarina trees line the shore, casting dappled shade that makes midday heat genuinely bearable. The water is calm enough for confident snorkelling, and the bay's protected shape keeps conditions predictable for families. Public beach huts dot the shoreline, so you won't be scrambling for shelter. It's a busy beach — popular with both locals and hotel guests — but the sheer length of the crescent means space can be found if you time your arrival right.
How to get there
Trou aux Biches sits right in the village of the same name, about 46 kilometres from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU). By car from Grand Baie it's a 10-minute drive daily, and a free public car park sits adjacent to the beach access point. Guests of Le Suffren Hotel can reach the beach by a 3-minute ferry crossing, while Hotel Zilwa Attitude also operates its own ferry service. There is no entry fee.
Who it's for
For couples
The casuarina canopy creates naturally shaded, intimate pockets of beach that feel removed from the busier central stretch — ideal for a quiet morning before the daytrippers arrive. Come in the dry season shoulder months of May or October for the best balance of calm water and manageable visitor numbers.
For families
The shallow, crystal-clear lagoon with its sandy bottom is about as family-friendly as Mauritius gets — no sudden drop-offs, calm conditions, and public beach huts for shade. Pack aqua shoes for the kids given the stonefish risk, and aim to arrive before 9am in peak months to secure a comfortable spot.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Trou aux Biches earns its popularity honestly — the white sand, crystal-clear shallow lagoon and casuarina shade canopy are the real deal on Mauritius's north coast. That said, go in with eyes open: no lifeguards patrol this beach, stonefish are a genuine hazard (aqua shoes are non-negotiable, not optional), and the December–January peak season can make the beach uncomfortably packed. The dry season window from May to October is when this place hits its stride — calm water, reliable sunshine and a far more relaxed atmosphere. It's a family beach at heart, and it does that job well. Skip the peak summer months, arrive early, and you'll find one of the most accessible and rewarding stretches of sand on the island.
What to do
The beach itself is the main event: the calm, crystal-clear lagoon and sandy bottom make for excellent snorkelling without needing a boat. Piments Public Beach is just 0.8 kilometres away if you fancy exploring a different stretch of shoreline. A short drive brings you to Cap Malheureux Church, the iconic red-roofed chapel on Mauritius's northernmost tip with views across to Coin de Mire island, and the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden — one of the oldest in the southern hemisphere — is only 12 kilometres away.
The row of mature casuarina trees along the shoreline makes a striking natural frame for wide shots of the white sand and crystal-clear water — best in soft morning light.
The crescent bay shape, shot from the waterline at either end, gives you a natural leading line curving into the lagoon. Public beach huts add a colourful, local detail that breaks up the standard postcard composition.
Where to eat
Right on the doorstep, Evaco Beach Club - La Plage (0.2 km) serves fish, regional dishes and seafood and is the obvious post-swim choice. Souvenir and l'ananas are both within 0.1 kilometres for lighter bites, while L'assiette du Nord and Be Restaurant round out the options within 0.2 kilometres if you want to linger over lunch.
Where to stay
The Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa sits 0.6 kilometres from the beach and carries a 4.6/5 rating across more than 5,000 reviews — the top pick in the immediate area. Casuarina Resort & Spa (0.9 km, 4/5) is a solid mid-range option, and Coral Azur Beach Resort (1.5 km, 4.1/5) offers good value a little further along the coast.
Photography
Shoot from the eastern end of the crescent at sunrise, when low golden light skims across the white sand and the casuarina silhouettes frame the lagoon without a soul in sight. Late afternoon from the waterline looking back toward the tree canopy gives you that layered, shade-dappled composition that works especially well in the dry season (May–October) when the sky stays clear.
Good to know
Motorised watercraft are prohibited in the swimming zones — respect the floating markers that demarcate boat channels and stay well inside them. No lifeguards are typically on duty, so swim within your ability and keep children close. Stonefish are present in these waters and can inflict serious venomous stings; wear aqua shoes whenever you're walking or wading on the bottom. December and January bring heavy hotel-guest overflow — arrive before 9am if you want a quiet spot, or better yet, plan your visit between May and October.
