Mont Choisy Beach
Three kilometres of calm lagoon, no hotel walls in sight

About
Plage de Mont Choisy stretches for roughly three kilometres along Mauritius's north coast, backed by a casuarina forest that doubles as a beloved public park. The lagoon here is turquoise and sheltered, making the water genuinely calm — the kind you can wade into without a second thought. Unlike much of the island's coastline, no hotel fence cuts you off from the sand; the foreshore is wide, open, and unapologetically public. Families spread picnic blankets under the casuarina shade while swimmers drift in the shallows. It's the north coast at its most unhurried.
How to get there
Mont Choisy sits just outside Grand Baie — about eight minutes by car — in the commune of Morcellement Choisy. Free public parking is available at the casuarina forest entrance, so driving is the easiest option. Guests of Hotel Zilwa Attitude or Le Suffren Hotel can also reach the beach by ferry, with Le Suffren's crossing taking around three minutes. There is no entry fee.
Who it's for
For couples
The absence of hotel frontage means you can walk the full three kilometres without interruption — a rare luxury on Mauritius that makes a slow evening stroll feel genuinely private. Settle under the casuarinas with a picnic as the light drops and the day-visitors head home.
For families
Mont Choisy is one of the north coast's most family-friendly beaches: the lagoon is calm and safe for swimming, the casuarina park has flat open space for kids to run, and free parking means no logistical headaches. Pack a picnic — this is exactly the kind of beach built for a long, lazy family day out.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Mont Choisy doesn't try to impress you with infinity pools or beach-butler service — and that's exactly the point. What you get instead is three kilometres of turquoise lagoon, a proper casuarina forest park, and a beach that belongs to everyone. It's one of the few spots on the Mauritius north coast where the experience feels genuinely local rather than resort-packaged. The swimming is safe and the access is easy, but go in with eyes open: there's no lifeguard, so personal responsibility matters. Come on a weekday during the dry season between May and October for the most comfortable conditions. Worth the detour — especially if you've spent the rest of your trip behind a hotel gate.
What to do
The beach itself is the main event — calm lagoon swimming and long barefoot walks along the wide foreshore keep most visitors happily occupied for hours. Just 1.3 km away, Blue Safari Submarine offers an entirely different perspective on the Mauritian reef without getting wet. The postcard-perfect Trou aux Biches Beach is only 2 km up the coast if you want to compare lagoons, and the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden — one of the oldest in the southern hemisphere, famous for its giant Victoria amazonica water lilies — is worth the 10 km drive inland.
Frame the casuarina forest from the beach at sunrise — the pine silhouettes against the turquoise lagoon are unlike anything else on the north coast.
Walk to the water's edge at low tide for a wide-angle shot of the three-kilometre foreshore stretching into the distance with no hotel buildings to crop out. The dappled light inside the casuarina park itself, with picnic-goers in the background, captures the authentic local atmosphere that sets this beach apart.
Where to eat
Eden Beach Restaurant Lounge-Bar, rated 4.4/5 across more than 1,300 reviews, is the closest sit-down option at 1.2 km from the beach. For something with a strong local flavour, La Rougaille Creole at 2.8 km carries a 4.6/5 rating from nearly 1,700 reviewers — one of the highest-rated spots in the area. Beach House Restaurant & Bar and N'joy are both around 2.4 km away and offer solid alternatives if the others are full.
Where to stay
Hotel des 2 Mondes is the closest option at just 0.5 km, followed by Hotel Tarisa at 0.6 km — both put you within easy walking distance of the sand. Beach Villas, Hotel Coral Azur, and Ocean Villas round out the choices within a kilometre, giving you a range of styles without straying far from the beach.
Photography
The best light hits the casuarina tree line in the early morning, when the low sun filters through the pines and the lagoon is at its most turquoise — set up near the forest edge for that shot. Late afternoon from the waterline looking back toward the trees gives you warm golden tones against the wide sandy foreshore with almost no visual clutter.
Good to know
No lifeguard is on duty at Mont Choisy, so swim within your own limits and keep a close eye on children in the water at all times. The casuarina park is a public space — take every piece of litter home with you, as littering is prohibited and the forest's charm depends on everyone respecting that rule. Arrive before mid-morning on weekends if you want a quieter stretch of sand. The beach path and park are flat, which helps, though no formal wheelchair infrastructure has been confirmed on-site.
