About

Spiaggia di Fetovaia sits on the south coast of Isola d'Elba, carved into an enclosed sheltered cove where a granite scrub promontory juts into the sea on a slender tombolo — a natural land bridge that makes this one of the island's most iconic formations. Golden sand meets turquoise water in a setting that feels almost theatrical, the kind of place where the light bounces off pale rock and the sea shifts from pale jade to deep blue depending on the hour. The cove's sheltered shape keeps the water calm and safe for swimming, while the reef edges along the headland reward snorkellers with clear visibility and marine life. It's romantic, it's iconic, and it fills up fast — so timing your visit matters more here than at many other beaches on Elba.

How to get there

Fetovaia sits within the commune of Campo nell'Elba on Elba's south coast. By car from Marina di Campo the drive takes around 15 minutes; by bus the same route runs five times a day and takes about 18 minutes. The main approach to the island is by ferry from Piombino, a 60-minute crossing that runs daily. Parking is available in a mixed paid car park, priced between €11 and €20 per day — but be warned: it fills completely by 9am in July and August, so arrive before 8am or use the shuttle service from Marina di Campo. Note that the path from the car park down to the beach is steep, and there are no adapted facilities on site.

Who it's for

For couples

The romantic vibe here is earned — a sheltered turquoise cove, a dramatic tombolo to walk out on, and golden sand that glows at dusk make Fetovaia one of the most atmospheric spots on Elba for two people with time to linger.

For families

The enclosed cove keeps the water calm and swimming safe, which is reassuring for families with younger children — just remember that dogs are banned in summer and the steep path from the car park means buggies and heavy gear are a real challenge.

Our take

Fetovaia is the real thing — a genuinely beautiful enclosed cove on Elba's south coast where the tombolo formation alone justifies the trip. Swimming is safe, snorkelling along the reef edges is rewarding, and the golden sand backed by granite scrub looks exactly as good as the photographs suggest. But this beach has a serious overcrowding problem in July and August: parking is effectively impossible, most of the sand disappears under paid concession umbrellas, and the narrow access path gets relentlessly busy. Come in June or September and you'll find the same turquoise water and far more of the golden sand to yourself. The steep car park path rules out easy access for anyone with mobility needs, and the no-dogs rule runs all summer — plan accordingly. Skip in August. Time it right, and Fetovaia delivers.— The wmb team

What to do

The reef edges along the tombolo headland make snorkelling the standout activity here — the granite formations shelter clear water and attract fish worth lingering over. For a change of scene, Marina di Campo is about 8 kilometres away on the south coast, offering a harbour, shops and Elba's longest beach. History lovers can make the 28-kilometre trip to Villa dei Mulini in Portoferraio, Napoleon's island residence and now a museum with period furnishings. The dramatic northwest cape of Capo Sant'Andrea, with its granite sea stacks and snorkelling, is further afield but worth the journey for those exploring the whole island.

Instagram spots

The tombolo land bridge framing the granite promontory against turquoise water is the signature shot — best captured at first light before the concession umbrellas go up.

From the elevated granite scrub headland you get a sweeping view over the entire enclosed golden-sand cove, ideal for wide-angle photography in the soft morning or late-afternoon light.

Where to eat

The closest option is Ristorante Barbatoja, just 0.6 kilometres from the beach — a convenient stop before or after a swim. A little further along, Osteria del Nonno offers Italian cooking at 2.3 kilometres, and L'Ogliera is another option at 2.6 kilometres. If you're willing to drive a little further, Bastia's serves regional cuisine at around 6.4 kilometres from the beach.

Where to stay

L'Ogliera and Corallo are both within 2.5 kilometres of the beach, making them practical bases for an early arrival before the car park fills. Da Fine at 2.3 kilometres and Hotel Sardi at 2.8 kilometres are similarly well-placed for the south coast. For those who prefer a little more distance from the action, Hotel Beltramonto is around 6.8 kilometres away.

Photography

The tombolo headland is the defining shot — shoot from the water's edge at the narrow land bridge in the early morning when the golden sand is empty and the turquoise water catches the low light. For a wider composition, climb the granite scrub promontory for an elevated view over the enclosed cove before the concession umbrellas open.

Good to know

Dogs are strictly prohibited on the beach from June through September, so leave four-legged companions at your accommodation during summer. Camping is not permitted anywhere at Fetovaia. In peak season, concession umbrellas and sun loungers cover most of the sand, so if you want a free patch of beach, arrive very early or visit in June or September. July and August bring extreme visitor numbers — parking becomes nearly impossible and most of the sand is taken by paid concessions, so those months are best avoided if you value space and ease.
