Sand Key Park Beach
White sand, turquoise water, and dogs welcome

About
Sand Key Park Beach sits on Belleview Island just south of Clearwater Beach, Florida, where the Gulf of Mexico delivers wide stretches of white sand and turquoise water without the shoulder-to-shoulder scene of its famous neighbor. The park faces the open Gulf on one side and a tidal lagoon on the bay side, giving the landscape a quietly varied feel. Views stretch toward Clearwater Pass inlet, where the channel cuts between the barrier islands and the water shifts in color and current. It's a county park beach — facilities are solid, the vibe is relaxed, and on a weekday morning you'll have long runs of sand largely to yourself.
How to get there
Head south from Clearwater Beach along Gulf Boulevard and Sand Key Park Beach is roughly a 10-minute drive. Parking is available on-site through automated pay stations at $6 per day; annual passes are available, and the lot can fill on summer weekends, so arrive early. A paved path leads from the parking area to the beach, and accessible restrooms are located in the park pavilion.
Who it's for
For couples
The relaxed pace, the tidal lagoon views, and the less-busy atmosphere make Sand Key a genuinely peaceful escape — come for a late-afternoon walk along the white sand as the light drops over the Gulf.
For families
The county park facilities, safe swimming conditions, and the designated dog area at the south end mean families with both kids and pets can spread out comfortably without feeling squeezed.
Our take
Sand Key Park Beach earns its reputation as a local favorite precisely because it doesn't try to compete with the Clearwater Beach strip — it just quietly delivers white sand, turquoise water, and a county park that actually works. Rip currents near Clearwater Pass are a real hazard; stay well clear of the inlet and check red tide alerts before every visit, particularly in summer. The dog-friendly section at the south end is a genuine draw, and the tidal lagoon on the bay side adds a dimension most Gulf beaches don't have. July, August, and September bring peak heat, daily thunderstorms, and the highest red tide risk — skip those months if you can. Come in June or between October and May for the best balance of warmth and calm. It's not flashy, but it's honest — and on a quiet weekday morning, it's hard to beat.
What to do
A short drive away, Clearwater Beach's Pier 60 hosts a nightly sunset festival worth catching after a beach day. If dolphins are on your list, Sea Screamer Dolphin Tours operates about 2 km from the park. For something the kids will talk about for years, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium — home of Winter the dolphin — is a marine rescue facility about 4 km away. Caladesi Island State Park, consistently ranked among the top beaches in the US, is reachable by ferry and sits roughly 8 km up the coast.
Frame the Clearwater Pass inlet from the waterline — the turquoise channel water cutting past white sand is the park's most striking shot.
The bay-side tidal lagoon offers glassy reflections in the early morning before the wind picks up. For dog lovers, the south-end off-leash area at low tide, with wet sand and happy dogs mid-run, makes for candid, lively frames.
Where to eat
Jimmy's Fish House & Iguana Bar is the closest option at under a kilometre away — a natural first stop for seafood after a salt-air afternoon. Black Coffee & Tasty Waffles and CKs Eats n Drinks are both within 1.5 km if you want something more casual. For a sit-down Gulf seafood experience, Caretta's on the Gulf is about 2.6 km from the park.
Where to stay
The Hampton Inn & Suites is the closest hotel at 0.9 km, putting you within easy walking distance of the beach. If you prefer a more intimate stay, the Grant Street Inn is about 7 km away. The J Hotel & Suites offers another option roughly 11 km out for those who want a bit more distance from the beach strip.
Photography
The Clearwater Pass inlet gives you a dynamic foreground of moving water against white sand — shoot it at golden hour when the turquoise water catches the low light. The tidal lagoon on the bay side offers calmer, reflective conditions and makes a quieter compositional contrast to the open Gulf face.
Good to know
Dogs are welcome but must stay within the designated off-leash area at the south end of the park — keep them out of the general swimming zones. No alcohol, no glass containers, and no fires are permitted anywhere in the park, so plan your picnic accordingly. Rip currents are possible near the Clearwater Pass inlet; swim well away from the pass and heed any posted flags. Red tide events can affect this beach — check Pinellas County alerts before you go, especially in summer months.
