Haulover Beach
Miami's famous clothing-optional stretch of white sand

About
Haulover Beach sits along the Atlantic coast in Bal Harbour Village, Miami Beach, Florida — a wide, white-sand beach lapped by blue open-ocean water. It's best known as Miami's designated naturist beach, drawing a relaxed, accepting visitors of locals and visitors who come for the sun, the kite-surfing wind, and the inlet views. The vibe here is unhurried and unpretentious — people fish from the shore, fly kites overhead, and stretch out on the sand without fuss. The white sand is soft underfoot and the blue water stretches wide to the horizon, though swimmers should approach with caution given the currents and tides that move through this stretch.
How to get there
You can reach Haulover Beach by car, bus, trolley, or bicycle. Route 100 bus runs every 15 minutes from various points, and the Miami Beach Trolley serves the area with approximately 20-minute frequency. Parking is available on-site and is paid — weekdays cost $7 for cars (with a $1 surcharge for the North Lot and Lot #1), while weekends and holidays cost $10 for cars; payments are accepted via Pay-by-Phone, and the lot is open from 8 a.m. until one hour before sunset.
Who it's for
For couples
Couples who value a relaxed, judgment-free atmosphere will feel at home here — the unhurried pace, wide white-sand shore, and open blue water make for a genuinely low-key afternoon together.
For families
Families should be aware that this is a clothing-optional beach, so it may not suit all family setups. Swimming safety is rated moderate due to rip currents and dangerous tides, so keep a close eye on children near the water at all times.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Haulover Beach is one of Miami's most distinctive stretches of coastline — not because of its scenery alone, but because of what it represents: a genuinely relaxed, clothing-optional space that locals have claimed as their own. The white sand is clean, the blue water is wide and open, and the kite-surfing and fishing give it an active, lived-in energy. That said, safety comes first here. Rip currents and dangerous tides are real and documented — do not wade in casually, and take posted warnings seriously. Swimming is rated moderate at best, and no flotation devices are permitted. Come for the sun, the wind, the inlet views, and the unhurried atmosphere — but respect the water.
What to do
Kite-surfing is a popular draw here thanks to the exposed coastal position and reliable wind. Fishing from the shore is a local tradition, and the inlet views make it a scenic spot to simply watch the water. If you want to venture further afield, TopGolf is about 8.9 km away, and Pegasus and Dragon — an activity venue — sits roughly 8.1 km from the beach.
The wide white-sand shoreline with the open blue Atlantic behind it is the classic Haulover frame — shoot wide in the early morning before the beach fills.
The inlet area to the north offers a different angle, with water on multiple sides and a strong sense of place that stands apart from standard Miami beach shots.
Where to eat
The nearest dining options are a short drive away. The Palm Miami is about 2.7 km from the beach, while Mamale Cafe & Pizza Bar, Meat Bar Miami (Mediterranean), Kinoko Sushi Bar and Asian Cuisine, and Pura Vida (salads) are all clustered around 2.8 km out. Pack snacks and water for the beach itself.
Where to stay
The closest hotel options require a bit of a drive — New Point is 8.5 km away and Design Suites is 8.6 km from the beach. River Park Hotel e Suits Miami is about 9.7 km out, giving you a comfortable base with easy access back to Haulover.
Photography
The white sand against the open blue water photographs best in the early morning when the light is low and soft, and the beach is quieter. The inlet views to the north offer a strong compositional anchor — position yourself near the water's edge at golden hour for the most dramatic shots.
Good to know
Haulover is a designated naturist beach — clothing-optional norms are observed and respected here, so come prepared. Rip currents are a real hazard at this beach: stay alert, swim only in designated areas, and never ignore posted warnings. No flotation devices are allowed in the water. Marine animals including sargassum may be present and can cause skin irritation or respiratory symptoms for sensitive individuals — rinse off after swimming and step out if you feel discomfort.
