Es Canar Beach
Golden sands, blue waters, and a ferry ride away

About
Playa Es Canar stretches roughly 700 metres of golden sand along the eastern coast of Ibiza, lapped by calm blue waters that make it one of the island's most reliably safe swimming beaches. The family vibe here is genuine — not performed — with moderate visitor numbers keeping things relaxed outside peak weeks. A Blue Flag flies overhead, signalling clean water and well-maintained facilities. Just steps from the shore, the Punta Arabí Hippy Market and a natural underground aquarium give the beach a cultural edge that most Ibizan strands simply can't match.
How to get there
Playa Es Canar is reached by ferry — there is no road access to the beach side. Ferries run daily from Santa Eulària and Ibiza Town, with the crossing taking around 30 minutes; day-trippers from Formentera can also connect via the same ferry network. If you're staying in the es Canar village itself, the beach is a flat five-minute walk from the resort area. There is no parking on the beach side, so leave the car behind and embrace the boat.
Who it's for
For couples
The ferry crossing itself sets a leisurely tone — arrive together by boat, claim a patch of golden sand, and follow it up with a wander through the Punta Arabí Hippy Market on a Wednesday afternoon.
For families
Safe swimming, a Blue Flag, and Aquarium Cap Blanc just 0.5 km away make this one of the more complete family beaches on Ibiza's eastern coast — the kids get the water and the wonder, and you get peace of mind.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Es Canar earns its Blue Flag and its reputation without overselling itself. The golden sand is genuine, the blue water is calm, and the ferry ride in from Santa Eulària or Ibiza Town is half the fun. What separates it from a dozen other Ibizan beaches is the Wednesday hippy market and the underground aquarium — two things within easy walking distance that give a full day real shape. Avoid August if you value breathing room; June and September are the sweet spots when the water is warm and the beach is manageable. It's a family beach that doesn't feel like a compromise.
What to do
The Punta Arabí Hippy Market, just 0.5 km from the shore, is one of Ibiza's largest craft markets, running every Wednesday with artisan stalls and live music — it's worth timing your visit around it. Aquarium Cap Blanc, also 0.5 km away, houses marine species inside a natural underground cavern and is a genuine hit with curious kids and adults alike. For a change of scenery, Cala Llenya — rated 4.6 out of 5 — sits just 1.6 km away and rewards the short detour. The town of Santa Eulària des Riu, 4.2 km along the coast, is known for its gastronomic scene and promenade if you want an evening out.
Shoot the 700-metre sweep of golden sand from the water's edge at low morning light for a wide, visitors-free frame.
The natural cavern of Aquarium Cap Blanc, 0.5 km away, gives you dramatic underground shots that look nothing like a typical beach post. On Wednesdays, the colourful craft stalls of Punta Arabí Hippy Market provide vivid, textured foregrounds with the blue water visible in the distance.
Where to eat
Restaurant Atzaró Beach Cala Nova, 0.7 km from the beach, holds a strong 4.3 out of 5 across over 1,500 reviews — solid evidence it's doing something right. For a wider dining scene, Santa Eulària des Riu is just 4.2 km away and well regarded for its restaurants and waterfront promenade.
Where to stay
The Iberostar Selection Santa Eulalia Ibiza, rated 4.7 out of 5 from more than 4,000 reviews, sits 1.3 km from the beach and is the standout option in the area. Bless Hotel Ibiza, 0.6 km away and rated 4.3 out of 5, is the closer choice if you want to roll out of bed and onto the ferry quickly.
Photography
Early morning light hits the golden sand at a low angle before the ferry traffic picks up — that's your window for clean, uncluttered shots of the blue water and shoreline. The Aquarium Cap Blanc cavern, 0.5 km away, offers a completely different frame: moody, cave-lit marine life that contrasts sharply with the bright beach scenes.
Good to know
Swimming is safe here and the Blue Flag status is a reliable indicator of water quality — still, keep an eye on young children near the waterline as with any open beach. Visit on a Wednesday if you can: the Punta Arabí Hippy Market is in full swing and pairs perfectly with a morning on the sand. August brings the heaviest visitor numbers to Ibiza island-wide — if you want space on that golden sand, aim for June, early July, or September instead. The nearest laptop-friendly café is Esbirra Ibiza, about 0.8 km away, but the beach itself is firmly in holiday-mode — leave the laptop behind.
