Portinatx Beach
Golden sands, blue flag waters, family Ibiza done right

About
Cala Portinatx stretches roughly 600 metres of golden sand along Ibiza's northern coast, tucked within the commune of Sant Joan de Labritja. The water runs a clean, open blue — calm enough for confident swimmers and young paddlers alike. This is resort Ibiza without the excess: sun loungers and facilities within reach, yet the pace stays unhurried. The nearby lighthouse at Far de sa Punta del Moscarter watches over the bay, and the whole scene feels more like a proper family holiday than a party postcard.
How to get there
From Ibiza Town, the drive takes around 45 minutes by car — straightforward on daily routes. Bus connections run from both Ibiza Town and Santa Eulalia, taking roughly 60 minutes. Parking is free, with a large car park near S'Arenal Gran and additional spaces close to the resort beaches. There's no entry fee.
Who it's for
For couples
The northern end of the beach tends to be quieter, and the short drive to the lighthouse at Far de sa Punta del Moscarter makes for a genuinely scenic evening outing away from the main resort strip.
For families
Safe swimming, free parking, resort facilities, and 600 metres of golden sand add up to a beach that handles a full family day without stress — the Blue Flag rating means water quality is independently verified, which matters when kids are in the water all afternoon.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Cala Portinatx is one of the more honest beaches on Ibiza's northern coast — it doesn't oversell itself, and it delivers. Golden sand, safe blue water, a Blue Flag, free parking, and resort facilities without the chaos of the island's southern hotspots. The lighthouse nearby and the village of Sant Joan de Labritja give you reasons to look beyond the sunbed. August is the one month to weigh carefully — the beach handles moderate visitor numbers well, but peak summer tips the balance. Come in June or September and you'll find the same facilities with room to breathe. A reliable, well-equipped family beach that earns its reputation without needing to shout about it.
What to do
The lighthouse at Far de sa Punta del Moscarter is just 4.2km away — the highest in the Balearic Islands, and the views from the headland are worth the short detour. Cova de Can Marçà, an ancient cave system roughly 16.6km out, runs tourist visits and is a solid half-day excursion. On Sundays, the village of Sant Joan de Labritja (about 8km inland) hosts a flea market beside its 18th-century church — a genuine local ritual rather than a tourist trap.
The Far de sa Punta del Moscarter lighthouse frames beautifully against the northern Ibiza sky — 4.2km from the beach and worth the drive for the shot.
The S'Arenal Gran end of the beach gives you the full 600-metre arc of golden sand in a single wide frame. Shoot the waterline at low sun for the blue water at its most vivid.
Where to eat
The Boat House, 7.5km from the beach, earns consistently strong praise and is the closest quality option worth planning around. Bar Anita and La Paloma, both around 9.3km away, offer reliable stops with local character on the drive back. Las Dalias de Ibiza, 9.6km out, is better known as a market venue but the restaurant draws serious numbers.
Where to stay
Invisa Hotel Club Cala Blanca sits 9.1km from the beach and is the nearest listed option — practical if you want to minimise daily travel. Further afield, Agroturismo Atzaró offers a rural Ibizan alternative at 9.6km, while Iberostar Selection Santa Eulalia Ibiza (13.6km) brings a polished resort experience with a strong guest rating.
Photography
Shoot from the eastern end of the beach in the early morning — the golden sand catches the low light cleanly and the lighthouse appears on the horizon. Late afternoon from the waterline gives you the blue water at its most saturated, with the resort backdrop softened by warm shadow.
Good to know
June through September is the sweet spot for weather and sea conditions. Avoid August if you dislike packed beaches — it's peak season and the car parks fill early. The beach holds a Blue Flag rating, so water quality is monitored and consistently good. Arrive before mid-morning in July to secure a good spot near the waterline.
