Grifeu BeachSpain Beach Guide
Golden sand, emerald water, fishing-village soul on the Costa Brava

About
Platja de Grifeu sits on the northern Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain, where the Mediterranean curves into a relaxed bay of golden sand and emerald water. The light here is soft and the pace is slower than the resort beaches further south — this is a local's beach, shaped by the fishing-village character of nearby Llançà. The water is safe for swimming, and the emerald shallows invite you to linger rather than rush. A shingle fringe gives way to that warm golden sand, and the surrounding landscape of Punta del Cros adds a rugged coastal backdrop that feels genuinely unspoiled.
How to get there
Platja de Grifeu is reached most easily by car from the N-260 road, and a large free parking area at the entrance means you won't circle looking for a spot — street parking is available nearby too. If you're staying in Llançà, you can walk to the beach in around 30 minutes, take a taxi in just 4 minutes, or catch the once-daily bus that runs on weekdays and takes about 5 minutes. The nearest train station is in Llançà, making a car-free visit entirely feasible. The closest major airport is Girona-Costa Brava Airport, roughly 62 km away.
Who it's for
For couples
The relaxed pace and local character make Platja de Grifeu a genuinely unhurried escape — golden sand, emerald water, and a short walk to the Mirador del Castellar for a sunset view that doesn't require sharing with a tour group.
For families
Safe swimming conditions and a free, easy-access parking area make logistics simple for families; the shallow emerald water is forgiving for younger swimmers, and the proximity to Llançà means food and facilities are never far away.
Our take
Platja de Grifeu is safe for swimming, with lifeguard cover through the summer season — that's the foundation everything else is built on. Beyond the safety tick, this is one of those northern Costa Brava beaches that still feels like it belongs to the people who live nearby rather than to the tourist industry. The golden sand and emerald water are the real thing, not a postcard exaggeration. The free parking, the walkable distance from Llançà, and the handful of decent restaurants within 1.4 km make it genuinely easy to spend a full day here without stress. Come in June or September if you want the best of the climate without the peak-summer intensity. It won't dazzle you with facilities, but that's exactly the point.
What to do
The headland of Punta del Cros, just 0.4 km from the beach, is the obvious first excursion — a short walk rewards you with sweeping views along the northern Costa Brava coastline. From there, push on to the Mirador del Castellar at 1.2 km for an elevated panorama that puts the emerald bay in full perspective. The rocky formation known as els Canons lies 2.5 km away and is worth the walk for anyone keen to explore the wilder edges of this stretch of coast.
The shoreline looking toward the rocky headland of Punta del Cros frames golden sand against emerald water in a single shot — best captured in the calm of early morning.
The Mirador del Castellar, 1.2 km away, delivers a wide elevated view of the bay that earns its place in any Costa Brava photo set.
Where to eat
A handful of restaurants are within easy reach of the beach. Paci - pacu is the closest at 1.2 km, followed by Viamar and Megi's both at 1.3 km — a short stroll into the Llançà area opens up your options quickly. Floc and Lbar, each around 1.4 km away, round out a solid local dining scene that leans into the fishing-village character of the area.
Where to stay
The nearest listed hotels are clustered around 6.5–6.7 km from the beach — options include Hôtel Arago, Résidence Victor Jara, La Dorade, Hôtel Le Ribéral, and Epaf Vacances. Staying in or around Llançà itself keeps you closest to the beach and the local atmosphere.
Photography
The golden sand against the emerald water photographs best in the soft morning light, when the bay is quieter and the colours are at their most saturated — shoot from the shoreline looking toward Punta del Cros for a natural coastal frame. The elevated viewpoint at Mirador del Castellar, 1.2 km away, gives you a wide-angle perspective over the entire bay that works particularly well in the late afternoon.
Good to know
A lifeguard service operates during the summer season, so swim within the supervised area and pay attention to flag signals. The beach has a relaxed, local vibe — arrive early on summer weekends to secure your patch of golden sand before the day-trippers from Llançà make the short trip over. The once-daily weekday bus is convenient but leaves little room for error, so check the timetable before you rely on it. This is not a naturist beach, so standard swimwear etiquette applies.
