Deauville Beach
Golden sands, Art Deco glamour, and Norman sea air

About
Plage de Deauville stretches roughly 1,400 metres along the Côte Fleurie in Calvados, Normandy, its wide golden sands meeting the grey waters of the English Channel. The beach is defined by Les Planches, the iconic boardwalk lined with Art Deco bathing cabins painted in candy stripes and bearing the names of Hollywood stars. It's a place where old-world luxury feels genuinely lived-in — families, promenaders, and sun-seekers all share the same golden shore. The water runs grey and cool, as the Channel always does, and the tidal range here is significant, reshaping the beach dramatically between morning and afternoon.
How to get there
From Caen, it's a straightforward 30-minute drive to Deauville — easy access by car on a daily basis. Foot passengers and drivers crossing from Portsmouth by ferry reach the Normandy coast in around six hours, making this a realistic weekend destination from the UK. Parking is available via street parking and parking garages near the beach, but note that parking on the Lais de Mer is paid on weekends, public holidays, and during spring and summer school holidays — free parking can be found elsewhere in Deauville. The boardwalk and beach access are wheelchair-accessible.
Who it's for
For couples
Deauville's luxury vibe and the evening promenade along Les Planches make it a natural fit for couples — dinner at Ciro's followed by a walk to Casino Barrière Deauville is a classic Normandy night out.
For families
The easy beach access, wide golden sands at low tide, and the wheelchair-accessible boardwalk make this a practical family beach — just keep children out of the deeper water given the Channel currents and tidal range.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Plage de Deauville is one of those rare beaches where the architecture is as much the attraction as the sea itself. The golden sands are wide and the setting is genuinely handsome — but go in with clear eyes: the Channel water is grey and cool, the currents are real, and swimming here demands respect and attention to conditions. This is not a beach for reckless dips. What it is, emphatically, is a place for slow mornings on the boardwalk, long lunches, and the particular pleasure of a French seaside town that has never tried to be anything other than itself. Come between June and September. Skip the winter months entirely.
What to do
Les Planches de Deauville is the centrepiece — the Art Deco boardwalk with its famous bathing cabins is worth a slow stroll at any hour. Two kilometres from the beach, the Deauville-La Touques Racecourse hosts prestigious horse racing events that define the town's calendar and reputation. For an evening with a different kind of drama, Casino Barrière Deauville sits just one kilometre away, its historic interiors as much an attraction as the gaming tables.
The Art Deco bathing cabins along Les Planches are the defining shot — frame them in a row at low sun for maximum colour contrast.
The full-length boardwalk perspective, shot from one end toward the other at low tide, gives you a vanishing-point composition with golden sand below and grey Channel sky above. The racecourse grandstand, two kilometres inland, offers a very different but equally photogenic slice of Deauville's character.
Where to eat
Bar du Soleil is the closest option at just 100 metres from the beach — ideal for a quick stop between tides. Ciro's Deauville, a Plage de Deauville institution at 200 metres, is the place for a proper sit-down meal with a sea view. For something more local and highly rated, Marinette in Trouville-sur-Mer — 1.2 kilometres away and rated 4.8 out of 5 across over 8,500 reviews — is well worth the short walk across the river.
Where to stay
The Cures Marines Hotel & Spa Trouville, part of the MGallery Collection, sits 0.9 kilometres from the beach and holds a 4.5-star rating from over 2,200 guests — a strong choice if you want spa comfort close to the shore. For families or longer stays on a different budget, Camping La Briquerie at 11 kilometres rates 4.2 out of 5 across more than 1,200 reviews and offers a greener alternative to the town's luxury hotels.
Photography
Shoot Les Planches at golden hour — the low Norman light catches the candy-striped cabins and casts long shadows along the boardwalk, making for a genuinely striking frame. At low tide, the wide expanse of golden sand reflects the grey Channel sky and gives you a clean, uncluttered foreground for wide-angle shots of the beach and boardwalk together.
Good to know
The tidal range at Plage de Deauville is strong — check tide times before you set up, because the waterline moves considerably and can catch you off guard. Currents in the Channel are real: swimming is rated moderate at best, and you should stay within flagged zones and heed any lifeguard instructions. Avoid visiting in November through February — the water is cold, the seas rough, and the resort largely closes down. True digital-detox spot — bring a paperback, because there's no coworking space and nowhere to plug in a laptop.
