Mawun Beach
Lombok's horseshoe bay where calm water meets wild headlands
About
Pantai Mawun curves into a near-perfect horseshoe on Lombok's south coast, its roughly 600 metres of white sand cradling a lagoon-like interior of turquoise water. Twin green headlands bookend the bay, sheltering it from the swells that batter neighbouring beaches — making it swimmable on days when the rest of the south coast is rough. A small river mouth crosses the sand, adding a quiet, almost otherworldly texture to the shoreline. The vibe is relaxed: no jet-ski touts, no beach clubs, just waving palms and the low hum of the ocean. It's one of the most geometrically striking beaches on the island.
How to get there
From Kuta Lombok it's a straightforward 20-minute drive; from Lombok International Airport (LOP), allow around 60 minutes by car. The road is manageable and the beach is considered easy to reach. A small paid parking area sits right at the beach entrance — fees are IDR 5,000 for motorbikes and IDR 10,000 for cars, collected per vehicle by an attendant.
Who it's for
For couples
The sheltered lagoon and dramatic twin headlands make Mawun one of the south coast's most scenic spots for a quiet afternoon together — pack a picnic from one of the nearby warungs and claim a stretch of white sand before midday.
For families
The calm lagoon interior is the main draw for families — it's genuinely gentler than most south-coast beaches, though parents must keep children away from the headland edges where reef and rip currents are real hazards. Flat sand access and parking right at the entrance make arrival easy with young kids.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Rip currents near the headlands and sharp reef at low tide are real risks here — read the water carefully and stay in the central lagoon zone. That said, when conditions are right, Mawun is one of the most rewarding beaches on Lombok's south coast: the horseshoe geometry is genuinely striking, the turquoise water is calm when neighbouring beaches are not, and the relaxed atmosphere hasn't been overrun. Avoid November through March — wet-season river outflow discolors the lagoon and strips away much of the appeal. Come in the dry season, arrive early, and you'll have one of Lombok's most photogenic bays largely to yourself before the day-visitors roll in. Worth the detour.
What to do
The snorkelling spot 2.3 km away is worth the short trip if you want to get under the surface. Keen surfers can check out the Are Guling West break, about 2.1 km along the coast. For a rewarding walk, the hidden pocket cove of Pantai Surga is a 15-minute cliff scramble from Mawun — no facilities, no fuss, just raw coastline. The long white-sand crescent of Selong Belanak Beach, 8.3 km away, offers gentle beginner surf and a completely different pace.
Climb the lower path of either green headland for the classic overhead horseshoe shot — turquoise water framed by jungle-covered cliffs on both sides.
The river mouth where fresh water crosses white sand creates an unusual foreground detail that photographs well in flat morning light. Shooting back toward the bay from waist-deep water at the lagoon's edge captures the full curve of the beach in a single wide frame.
Where to eat
Warung Len is the closest option, just 100 metres from the beach — ideal for a quick bite before or after a swim. Rian Warung and Pantai Mawun warung are both within 200 metres and serve Indonesian staples. If you want something a little more varied, Dean's Warung at 400 metres is a popular stop among visitors passing through the area.
Where to stay
Blue Monkey Villa, 1 km from the beach, is the closest place to rest your head. Owa Lodge at 1.3 km and Mawun Mud Village at 1.6 km offer a more immersive, local feel for those who want to linger on the south coast. For more amenities, Black Fin and S Hotel are both around 5 km away.
Photography
The best shot at Mawun is from the lower slope of either headland at golden hour — the horseshoe geometry and turquoise water compress beautifully into a single frame. Early morning light keeps the sand clean and the water glassy before day-visitors arrive.
Good to know
Rip currents develop near both headlands during larger swells — stay in the central lagoon zone and never swim close to the rocky edges. At low tide, sharp reef near the headlands is a serious hazard for bare feet and wading swimmers; water shoes are a smart call. Lifeguard presence is minimal, so you're largely responsible for your own safety. An unpredictable shore break can appear near the beach's centre without warning — watch the water pattern before you wade in, especially with children.
