Morningstar BeachUnited States Virgin Islands Beach Guide
Beige sand, blue water, one serious swim warning

About
Morningstar Beach sits on the south shore of Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands, just minutes from Charlotte Amalie by road or water taxi. Beige sand meets blue water at the harbor mouth, with a cliff-top resort rising behind the shoreline and the energy of a lively, resort-adjacent beach all around. The south-shore position keeps the water relatively calm compared to the island's exposed northern coasts, and the setting — framed by resort architecture above and open blue water ahead — makes for a striking scene. Access is easy, the vibe is lively, and the water taxi connection to downtown Charlotte Amalie makes it an easy beach to reach from town.
How to get there
From Charlotte Amalie, Morningstar Beach is roughly a 10-minute drive by car or a 10-minute ferry hop from the Charlotte Amalie waterfront — the water taxi is widely considered the preferred approach. Parking at the resort is available, including paid valet at $35 per night; some limited free public parking is also available nearby. Public beach access is on the western end of the beach — resort facilities are reserved for resort guests only.
Who it's for
For couples
The lively south-shore setting, easy water taxi access, and the scenic contrast of beige sand against blue water make Morningstar a pleasant spot for couples who want resort-adjacent atmosphere without committing to a resort stay — just keep out of the water.
For families
Families will appreciate the easy access and moderate visitor levels, but the current Enterococci Bacteria warning makes the water off-limits — plan this as a beach-walk and scenery stop rather than a swim day, and pair it with a water taxi trip to the Charlotte Amalie Historic District.
Our take
Let's be direct: Morningstar Beach is currently under a health warning for elevated Enterococci Bacteria levels, making swimming and fishing unsafe — that changes the entire calculus of a visit. Come for the scenery, the easy water taxi ride from Charlotte Amalie, and the lively south-shore atmosphere, but stay out of the water. Ongoing resort renovations add construction noise and may affect public access on the western end, so this is not the pristine escape the postcard suggests right now. The beige sand and blue water are genuinely attractive, and the harbor-mouth setting with a cliff-top resort behind you is photogenic. But until the water quality is cleared, treat this as a scenic stop and a launchpad for exploring Charlotte Amalie — not a beach day.
What to do
The Charlotte Amalie Historic District, about 3 km away and reachable in roughly 10 minutes by water taxi, offers Danish colonial architecture, Fort Christian, the famous 99 Steps, and duty-free shopping. Back closer to the beach, the Pirate Treasure Museum is about 1.6 km away. Limetree Beach, just 2.5 km along the south shore, is worth a visit for its wider sand strip and resident iguanas.
The cliff-top resort backdrop shot from the western public end of the beach captures the full drama of beige sand curving against blue water.
The water taxi dock at harbor mouth gives a wider frame with open blue water beyond.
Where to eat
For sushi and a change of pace, Beni Iguana's Sushi Bar & Restaurant is about 1.5 km from the beach. Rancho Latino is roughly 1.9 km away, while Virgilio's Restaurant and the Jolly Roger are both around 2.8 km away for more dining variety.
Where to stay
Marriott's Frenchmen Cove is the closest option at just 0.4 km from the beach, making it the most convenient base. For more character, Hotel 1829 and The Inn at Blackbeard's Castle are both under 3 km away in the Charlotte Amalie area.

The cliff-top resort backdrop framing the beige sand and blue water makes for a striking scene. The water taxi dock and harbor mouth offer a wider compositional angle, with open blue water stretching ahead.
Good to know
Public access is on the western end of the beach only; do not expect to use resort facilities unless you are a guest. Critically, Morningstar Beach has recently been deemed unsafe for swimming or fishing due to elevated levels of Enterococci Bacteria — do not enter the water. Resort renovations are ongoing, which may impact public access points and cause construction noise, so check conditions before you go. Stay clear of the water taxi dock area, as boat traffic poses an additional hazard near the shoreline.
