Issos Beach
Wild dunes, turquoise water, kite-surfers on the horizon

About
Issos is a long, undeveloped stretch of golden sand on Corfu's southwest coast, backed by 8-metre dunes draped in juniper scrub and framed by the shimmering waters of Korission Lagoon. The turquoise sea meets the shore with a raw, wind-sculpted energy that keeps the beach feeling genuinely wild. There's no concrete, no sunbed rows, no beach bar — just sand, sky, and the occasional kite-surfer carving through the northwest wind. The dune system is one of the most intact in the Ionian Islands, and the lagoon backdrop gives the whole scene a quietly dramatic quality. It's the kind of beach that rewards those who want nature, not infrastructure.
How to get there
From Corfu Town, drive south for around 50 minutes — the beach is in the commune of Chlomos in south Corfu. Corfu Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport (CFU) is 19 km away, making it a straightforward first or last stop on a Corfu trip. Parking is free at an informal dirt-track area at the Issos access point. There's no entry fee.
Who it's for
For couples
Issos rewards couples who want solitude over spectacle — long walks on golden sand with the lagoon glittering behind the dunes and almost no one else around. Come on a weekday outside peak season and you may have the whole stretch to yourselves.
For families
Families with older, active children who enjoy nature and kite-watching will find Issos exciting, but the soft dune terrain, lack of facilities, and kite-surfing activity in the water mean it's not ideal for very young children or families expecting a managed beach environment. Pack everything you need and keep kids away from the kite-surfing zones.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Issos is one of those beaches that feels genuinely unfinished by human hands, and that's exactly the point. The 8-metre dunes, the lagoon at your back, the turquoise water ahead — it's a landscape that earns its wild reputation. That said, go in with clear eyes: there are no facilities, the kite-surfing zones demand respect from swimmers, and the soft terrain is not accessible for everyone. If you're after a managed, lounger-and-cocktail beach, this isn't it. But if you want south Corfu at its most raw and ecologically rich, Issos delivers without compromise. Come in June or September to avoid the peak wind season clashing with peak visitor numbers. Worth the 50-minute drive from Corfu Town.
What to do
The star attraction is Korission Lagoon, just 0.3 km away — a protected wetland where flamingos, herons, and migratory birds gather, separated from the sea by the very dunes you're standing on. Head 4.3 km south to Halikounas Beach for flamingo sightings in spring and a remote lagoon-mouth atmosphere accessible via an olive grove track. Agios Georgios South Beach, 1 km away, extends for 9 uninterrupted kilometres with turtle nesting areas — worth a walk if you have the afternoon. For a longer excursion, Chapel Pantokrator on Mt. Stavros is about 9.8 km away.
The view from the crest of the 8-metre dunes looking seaward — golden sand foreground, turquoise water beyond, zero development in frame — is the defining shot.
The lagoon-side angle at dusk, with the dune silhouette and bird activity over Korission, gives you something quieter and rarer. Kite-surfers against the open sky make for dynamic action frames when the northwest wind is blowing.
Where to eat
The nearest dining options cluster around 0.9–1 km from the beach. Mondo's Bar & Grill serves American-style food, San Carlos and Akvila Travel Company are both within 0.9 km, and Oceano offers Greek cuisine at 1 km. Billy's Family Restaurant rounds out the options at the same distance — bring a picnic to the beach itself, since there's nothing on-site.
Where to stay
A handful of small, independent stays sit about 1.1 km from the beach: Anastasia Apartments, Sportclub Paradise, Pension Dionysos, and Flora's Apartments all offer simple bases close to the dunes. If you want a pool, Elena Pool is 1.8 km away.
Photography
Shoot the dunes at golden hour from the lagoon side — the 8-metre sand ridges lit warm against the turquoise water make for a striking frame. Early morning is best for lagoon reflections and bird activity near Korission, with no kite-surfers yet to break the stillness.
Good to know
Do not walk on or trample the dune vegetation — it's fragile and protected, and the dunes depend on it. Kite-surfing zones are designated along this beach; swimmers must keep well clear of those sections, especially when northwest winds pick up and kite-surfers are active. Swimming is rated moderate here, but be aware that kite-surfing activity can interrupt swimming zones without much warning. The beach has no facilities whatsoever, so bring everything — water, food, sun protection — before you arrive.
