Wye River Beach
Sheltered golden sands where river meets the Great Ocean Road

About
Wye River Beach sits at the foot of steep, forested valley walls where the Wye River spills into blue Southern Ocean water — a compact 300-metre stretch of golden sand that feels a world apart from the busier resort towns along the Great Ocean Road. The sheltered position buffers the beach from open ocean swell, keeping the water calmer than most Victorian coastal spots. This is a genuine village beach: the foreshore general store is steps away, the community is small and residential, and the pace is unhurried. The surrounding hills carry their own story — the post-bushfire rebuild of Wye River is visible in the newer homes dotting the valley, a quiet reminder of the 2015 fires that reshaped this community.
How to get there
Wye River Beach sits directly on the Great Ocean Road, roughly 15 minutes by car from Lorne — simply follow the Great Ocean Road and the foreshore car park appears at the village centre. A small free car park serves the beach, but spaces fill quickly on peak summer weekends, so arrive early. If you'd rather not drive, a bus runs from Lorne three times daily and takes about 28 minutes. There is no entry fee.
Who it's for
For couples
The quiet, unhurried atmosphere and scenic valley setting make this an easy choice for couples wanting a low-key coastal escape without the noise of a larger resort town — a short walk to the general store, golden sand underfoot, and forested hills all around.
For families
The sheltered position and calm water relative to exposed Great Ocean Road beaches make Wye River a reasonable family stop, and dogs on leash are welcome — though always check whether the Surf Lifesaving Club is patrolling before letting kids swim, as the beach is unpatrolled outside summer.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Wye River Beach won't impress anyone chasing big surf or resort-style facilities — and that's exactly the point. It's a small, sheltered, genuinely quiet village beach with golden sand, blue water, and forested hills pressing in on all sides. Safety first: the beach is unpatrolled outside summer, river mouth rips are a real hazard after rain, and the surrounding hills carry serious bushfire risk in summer — check CFA alerts every time, not just once. If you visit with those realities understood, what you get is one of the more honest and unhurried stops on the Great Ocean Road. The post-bushfire rebuild gives the village a resilient, community-first character that's worth respecting. Come for the calm water, the koalas up the road at Kennett River, and the kind of afternoon where the general store is all the infrastructure you need.
What to do
Just 5 kilometres up the road, the Kennett River Koala Colony offers some of the most reliable koala sightings in Victoria — look up into the grey gums along Grey River Road. The Cumberland River Reserve, about 8 kilometres toward Lorne, has campgrounds and forested walking tracks worth an afternoon. Divers and history buffs can explore the W.B. Godfrey Wreck site roughly 3.8 kilometres away, and Artillery Rocks at 4.6 kilometres adds another coastal point of interest for those keen to explore beyond the sand.
The classic frame is from the waterline looking inland — golden sand, blue water, and the steep forested valley walls converging in the background, best shot in early morning when the light is warm and the beach is empty.
The Wye River mouth offers a second strong composition: the river channel cutting across the sand toward the ocean, with the village foreshore and general store visible in the mid-ground.
Where to eat
The Wye River General Store, just 100 metres from the beach, is your on-the-spot option for supplies and a laptop-friendly coffee stop. For a proper sit-down meal you'll need to head toward Lorne, around 13 kilometres away, where options include the Maple Tree Lorne Seafood Restaurant, Lorne Beach Pavillion, and the casual Pit Stop Lorne — all within a kilometre of each other.
Where to stay
The Wye Beach Hotel sits just 100 metres from the sand and is the obvious base if you want to stay in the village itself. For more choice, Movida Lorne, Cumberland Lorne Resort, and Comfort Inn Lorne are all clustered around 12.6 kilometres away in Lorne, with the grand heritage-listed Grand Pacific Hotel a short distance further.
Photography
The most striking shot is from the beach looking back toward the valley — steep, densely forested walls framing the golden sand and blue water in a single frame, best captured in the soft morning light before the sea breeze picks up. The Wye River mouth itself, where fresh water meets the ocean, offers an intimate foreground element that works particularly well at low tide when the river channel is clearly defined.
Good to know
This beach is unpatrolled outside summer months — swim at your own risk year-round, and note that the Wye River Surf Lifesaving Club only patrols during summer. After heavy rain, river mouth rips can develop quickly near the Wye River outlet, so stay well clear of that zone if the river is running high. During summer, bushfire risk in the surrounding forested hills is real — check CFA alerts before you visit, and be especially cautious in January, the peak fire danger period. The community here is residential and tight-knit, so keep noise down, take your rubbish with you, and note that dogs are welcome on leash outside designated swimming areas.
