About

Wategos Beach curves along a north-facing bay in Byron Bay, New South Wales, where white sand meets turquoise water in one of the east coast's most photogenic settings. At roughly 350 metres long, it's compact enough to feel intimate yet spacious enough to breathe. A luxury residential backdrop frames the dunes, and dolphins are spotted regularly just beyond the break. The Cape Byron walking track runs directly above, connecting the beach to Australia's most easterly lighthouse. The vibe is unhurried and romantic — this is Byron at its most refined.

How to get there

From Byron Bay town centre, drive via Lighthouse Road — it's about 8 minutes by car. You can also walk the Cape Byron track from town, a rewarding 30-minute hike with coastal views. Paid parking is available in a small car park adjacent to the beach, charged at $4.00 per hour with a 4-hour limit enforced 9am–6pm daily. Spaces are limited and scarce at peak times; no wheelchair access exists, and the path from the car park is sandy.

Who it's for

For couples

Wategos is one of the most romantic beaches on the Australian east coast — the sheltered bay, the lighthouse silhouette at dusk, and the upscale residential calm make it ideal for a slow morning walk followed by breakfast at Rae's, just 0.1km away.

For families

The sheltered north-facing aspect keeps conditions calmer than exposed beaches nearby, but note that Wategos is unpatrolled and rip currents can occur — families with young children should wade cautiously and stay close to shore. Dogs are not permitted, and there are no on-beach facilities, so pack everything you need.

Our take

Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen

Wategos is unpatrolled — that's the first thing to know. Rip currents can develop in what looks like a calm bay, so enter the water with real caution and never assume the sheltered aspect means safe swimming. With that said, this is one of the most beautiful small beaches in New South Wales: white sand, turquoise water, a working lighthouse on the ridge, and dolphins offshore. It rewards early risers who walk in via the Cape Byron track and have the bay largely to themselves before the daytrippers arrive. Skip December and January without hesitation. Come in February or March, walk up to the lighthouse, watch the longboarders drift across The Pass, and let the afternoon stretch out at Rae's. That's the Wategos formula — and it works.— The wmb team

What to do

The Cape Byron Lighthouse, just 0.8km away, is Australia's most easterly lighthouse and offers panoramic coastal views — the walking track passes directly above Wategos, making a combined beach-and-lighthouse morning an easy win. Easterly Point Lookout at 0.4km is a prime spot for dolphin and whale watching within the Cape Byron State Conservation Area, which encloses the beach. Surfers and spectators alike make the short walk west along the Cape Byron track to The Pass, one of Australia's most celebrated longboard waves, about 1.2km from Wategos.

Instagram spots

The Cape Byron walking track above the beach delivers the definitive overhead shot — turquoise water, white sand, and the headland all in one frame, best at sunrise before visitors arrive.

The eastern end of the beach looking back toward the lighthouse ridge is the second key angle, particularly effective in late afternoon light when the surf break catches the low sun.

Where to eat

Beach Byron Bay, 1.3km away, serves regional seafood and is the closest dining option with a coastal sensibility that suits the Wategos mood. For something different, Trattoria Basiloco offers Italian about 1.9km away, while Warung Bagus, Traditional Thai, and Finn Pøké are all within 2km of the beach. There are no food vendors on the beach itself, so plan ahead.

Where to stay

Rae's on Wategos sits just 0.2km from the sand and is the standout option — a boutique hotel with direct proximity to the beach and a laptop-friendly café on site. Thomson Cottage at 0.6km and Imeson Cottage at 0.8km offer a quieter, more residential feel. Partridge Cottage & Geoffs Shed at 0.8km and Waves at 1.9km round out the options for those wanting to stay close.

Photography

The best shots come from the Cape Byron walking track above the beach at sunrise, when the turquoise water and white sand glow against the headland with almost no visitors in frame. For a lower angle, position yourself at the eastern end of the beach at golden hour — the lighthouse appears on the ridge behind the surf break, and dolphin sightings in the bay are a genuine bonus.

Good to know

No camping and no alcohol are permitted on Wategos Beach — respect the residential neighbours who live directly behind the dunes. The beach is unpatrolled with no lifeguard on duty, and rip currents can develop; assess conditions carefully before entering the water and never swim alone. In peak season, parking is severely limited — arrive before 8am to secure a space, or walk in via the Cape Byron track. Avoid December and January entirely if you can: NSW school holidays make parking near-impossible and the beach becomes heavily packed with visitors.
