Citara Beach
Golden sand, thermal pools, and turquoise water on Ischia

About
Spiaggia di Citara stretches roughly 200 metres along the western coast of Ischia, near the village of Cuotto in Forio. The golden sand meets turquoise water in a wide, open bay that catches the afternoon sun beautifully. What sets this beach apart is its immediate neighbour: Giardini Poseidon, the largest thermal park on the island, with 22 pools fed by natural hot springs and direct access to the shore. It's a family-oriented spot — safe for swimming, easy to reach, and well-equipped — though that combination means it draws a steady stream of visitors through the summer months.
How to get there
From Forio centre, the beach is a quick 6-minute drive; paid parking is available nearby at guarded or private lots, typically costing €2–€3 per hour. No specific app or machine is documented — expect to pay an attendant or at the lot entrance. If you'd rather skip the car, bus CS from Ischia Porto runs every 30 minutes and reaches the beach in about 40 minutes, dropping you at a stop right by the beach. Entry to Giardini Poseidon thermal park is separate and ticketed at the gate.
Who it's for
For couples
Couples who want more than just a beach day will find the combination of thermal pools and a calm turquoise bay genuinely relaxing — book a morning at Giardini Poseidon, then retreat to the golden sand for the afternoon. It's not a secluded spot, but the thermal park adds a spa-like quality that lifts it above a standard beach outing.
For families
Citara is one of the most family-ready beaches on Ischia — safe swimming, easy bus access, a bus stop right at the beach, and the thermal park next door with family facilities mean you can keep kids of all ages entertained without a car. The shallow, turquoise water close to shore is calm enough for young swimmers.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Citara earns its reputation honestly. The golden sand is wide, the turquoise water is safe, and having 22 thermal pools literally next door is a combination you won't find at many beaches in Europe. It's not a secret, and it doesn't pretend to be — this is a busy, well-serviced family beach that does what it promises. Skip August without hesitation; the experience in June or September is noticeably better. The bus connection from Ischia Porto is reliable and takes the parking stress off the table entirely. If you want thermal wellness and a proper beach in one stop, Citara delivers.
What to do
The obvious draw is Giardini Poseidon right next door — 22 thermal pools of varying temperatures with direct beach access make it easy to alternate between a hot soak and a dip in the turquoise sea. A short trip inland brings you to Giardini La Mortella, a remarkable botanical garden created by Susana Walton, wife of composer William Walton, about 3.5km away. For a panoramic reward with minimal effort, Belvedere di Zaro is 3.7km from the beach and consistently rated among the best viewpoints on Ischia.
The view from the water's edge looking back at the thermal park complex with the golden sand in the foreground is the classic Citara shot — best before 9am when the beach is clear.
The 22-pool terrace inside Giardini Poseidon, with its tiered levels dropping toward the turquoise sea, makes for a striking architectural frame. The northern end of the beach at golden hour, with the Ischian hills behind, gives you warm tones and depth without the daytime foot traffic.
Where to eat
Bagno Bar Ristorante Viola sits just 100 metres from the water and is the most convenient option for a meal or drink without straying far from your towel. Il Galeone Lido Ristorante is 200 metres away and works well for a proper sit-down lunch. Giardini Poseidon itself has dining facilities on-site, and Ristorante Montecorvo, about 1km away, is worth the short walk for a quieter setting.
Where to stay
Sorriso Thermae Resort & SPA is the closest option at just 300 metres from the beach, offering thermal facilities of its own. Hotel Terme Tritone Resort & Spa, 3.3km away, holds a strong 4.7-star rating across over 1,500 reviews and suits those wanting a more resort-style stay with spa access. For something with a broader base of feedback, Forio – Bay of Sorgeto at 2.7km has accumulated over 6,700 reviews and a solid 4.5-star score.
Photography
The best light on Citara's golden sand hits in the early morning, when the turquoise water is calm and the beach is at its quietest — shoot from the waterline looking back toward the thermal park for a layered composition. Late afternoon from the northern end of the beach gives you warm backlight over the bay and the volcanic hills of Ischia in the distance.
Good to know
Swimming is safe here, but August brings peak-summer intensity — the beach gets packed and the thermal park queues stretch long, so June or September are far smarter choices. Arrive early in the morning to claim a good spot on the golden sand before the daytrippers roll in. The thermal park has dedicated accessibility facilities, making it one of the more inclusive spots on the island. Paid parking fills fast on weekends, so the bus from Ischia Porto is genuinely the easier option if you're flexible.
