Simonov zaliv BeachSlovenia Beach Guide
Sheltered pebble bay where pine shade meets crystal-clear water

About
Plaža Simon sits in a sheltered bay on the Slovenian Riviera near Koper, tucked within the San Simon Resort campsite in the village of Jagodje. At roughly 106 metres long, it's a compact stretch of pebble — no sand here — lapped by crystal-clear water that stays shallow well out from shore, making every step in feel unhurried and safe. Pine trees line the back of the beach, throwing cool shade across the stones on hot summer afternoons. The gradual entry and calm, protected water give the whole place a distinctly family-oriented feel, and the campsite infrastructure means facilities are close at hand.
The MOOVSWELL of Simonov zaliv Beach
The moment after.
MOOVSWELL is a state of mind. The wave is the action, the rush; right after comes the calm, the breath, that moment where you slow down and find your balance again. This score measures what a beach does to you in that very moment.
Here, you slow right down
Dominant profile : Breath + Soothing
You wade in slowly, the kids splash ahead, and the pines keep everything cool and quiet behind you.
Sheltered bay, pine shade, shallow water — nothing here rushes you. You just settle in.
It's gentle activity: kids in the shallows, a campsite hum nearby. No real buzz, just easy movement.
Crystal-clear water, gradual entry, cool shade above pebbles. It feels looked-after and genuinely calm.
A compact Slovenian riviera pocket, campsite-backed and unpretentious. Pleasant, but it won't haunt you.
How to get there
From Izola the drive takes around 5 minutes; from Portorož allow about 15 minutes. A ferry service operated by TPL FVG also connects to the area, making a car-free arrival possible. Parking is available on-site at the campsite and is paid — day visitors can expect to pay around €5 for the day, while guests of San Simon Resort park free. The approach from the campsite is relatively flat, though the pebble surface limits full wheelchair access once you reach the shore.
Who it's for
For couples
The pine shade and calm, crystal-clear water create a genuinely quiet atmosphere outside peak season — a low-key afternoon on the pebbles with Izola Old Town just 2 km away for an evening stroll makes for an easy, unhurried day.
For families
The shallow gradual entry is the standout feature for families — young children can wade in confidently while parents watch from the shaded pebble shore, and the campsite infrastructure means toilets and facilities are never far away.
Our take
Plaža Simon is safe for swimming — the water is calm, crystal-clear, and the gradual entry makes it one of the more reassuring beaches on the Slovenian Riviera for anyone with young children or less confident swimmers. It's not a dramatic beach: 106 metres of pebble, a line of pines, and campsite facilities in the background. That's the honest picture. What it does well, it does consistently — shade, shelter, clear water, and easy access from both Izola and Portorož. The moderate visitor numbers mean it rarely feels overwhelming, but come early in high summer if you want a pine-shaded spot. Piran Old Town is only 8 km away and Strunjan Landscape Park just 3 km, so this works best as part of a wider Slovenian Riviera day rather than a destination in itself. Solid, family-friendly, and unpretentious.
What to do
The Strunjanska dolina nature trail begins just 1 km away and makes a pleasant morning walk before the beach heats up. Izola Old Town, a Venetian-influenced fishing town with a colourful harbour, is only 2 km away and well worth an hour of wandering. A little further along the coast, Strunjan Landscape Park — a protected area of flysch cliffs and coastal paths — sits about 3 km from the beach. If you're travelling with children, the Parna lokomotiva BBÖ P3 attraction is roughly 2 km away and tends to spark genuine curiosity.
Frame the pine trees against the crystal-clear shallows from the water's edge at low morning light for a shot that captures the beach's signature shade-and-sea contrast.
The sheltered bay's calm surface mirrors the sky cleanly at golden hour — stand at the far end of the 106-metre shoreline for a wide composition of the bay. For a detail shot, water shoes and smooth pebbles at the waterline photograph well against the clear water.
Where to eat
Pergola is the closest option at just 0.4 km, convenient for a quick lunch without straying far from the water. For fish, Gostilna Perla is about 1.2 km away and sits alongside Fast Food Veni and Restavracija Koral at the same distance if you want more choice. Jadranka is a slightly longer 2.2 km stretch of the legs but rounds out the local dining options well.
Where to stay
Haliaetum is the nearest hotel at just 0.3 km — essentially on the doorstep of the beach. Laguna sits about 3 km away, and Hotel Svoboda - Talaso Strunjan is another option at 3.3 km. Villa Darina and Hotel Tomi offer further alternatives at 3.9 km and 4.4 km respectively.
Photography
The best shots come in the early morning when the light filters through the pine canopy and catches the crystal-clear shallows at a low angle — position yourself at the water's edge looking back toward the trees for depth and contrast. The sheltered bay frame also works well at golden hour, with the calm surface reflecting the sky and the compact shoreline giving a natural foreground.
Good to know
Respect the campsite guests' designated areas — keep to visitor zones and follow any signage you encounter. The pebble surface can be hard on bare feet, so water shoes are a genuinely useful addition to your bag. Arrive before mid-morning in July and August to secure a shaded spot under the pines before the day-trippers settle in. Dogs are generally tolerated here, but check the specific campsite rules for the section you plan to use.
