Lučice Beach
Golden sand, olive shade, no sunbeds — just the sea

About
Plaža Lučice is a small, intimate cove on the island of Vatulja near Bar, tucked along Montenegro's Adriatic coast and hidden from the main road by a fringe of ancient olive trees that press right to the water's edge. The golden sand meets turquoise water in a setting that feels genuinely off the tourist circuit — no sunbed concession, no beach bar queue, just the soft lap of the Adriatic. A single stone konoba sits at the cove, the only structure breaking the natural scene. At roughly 120 metres of shoreline, it stays quiet even in peak summer, rewarding those willing to make the 20-minute walk from Petrovac.
How to get there
Plaža Lučice is reachable on foot only — hike from Petrovac, a walk of around 20 minutes. There is no parking at the beach itself, so leave your vehicle in Petrovac before setting out. The path is unmarked and easy to miss from the main road, so pay attention as you leave town. No entry fee applies.
Who it's for
For couples
The lack of sunbed concessions and the olive-shaded approach make Lučice feel genuinely private — bring a blanket, find a spot under the trees, and the cove is essentially yours for the afternoon.
For families
Swimming is safe and the water is calm, making it a comfortable spot for children to paddle; just note there is no lifeguard, so supervision is entirely on parents, and the 20-minute walk means carrying all your own gear.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
No lifeguard, no sunbeds, no parking, a 20-minute walk on an unmarked path — Lučice filters out anyone not genuinely committed to being here, and that's exactly its appeal. Swimming is safe, the turquoise water is clear, and the golden sand stays uncovered all day because nobody is renting out the space above it. The olive grove pressing to the shoreline is the detail that sets this cove apart from every other beach on the Montenegrin coast. Come in June or early September and you'll likely share it with very few others. It's a short hike from Petrovac but feels a world away from it. Worth the detour.
What to do
The beach itself is the main event, but when you're ready to explore, Petrovac Beach is just 2 km away — a sheltered sandy bay framed by a Venetian fortress and offshore islets worth an afternoon stroll. Buljarica Beach, 10 km out, stretches for 2 km of undeveloped sand backed by a protected wetland lagoon, ideal for a half-day escape. For something more dramatic, Bar Old Town (Stari Bar) lies 20 km away — a ruined medieval hilltop town carrying layers of Ottoman and Venetian history.
Frame the shot from inside the olive grove looking seaward — the ancient trunks create a natural arch over the turquoise water and golden sand below.
The waterline itself, shot low at golden hour with the stone konoba softly out of focus in the background, captures the unhurried character of the cove.
Where to eat
The closest dining option is Pinus Maritimum, just 0.1 km away, serving a mix of Asian and Balkan dishes — handy for a meal before or after the hike. Further into Petrovac you'll find Ponta at 0.7 km and a cluster of options including Oaza, Sunce, and Paradiso (Italian) all around the 1 km mark. Pack a picnic if you want to eat on the beach itself — there's no food service at the cove.
Where to stay
Castellastva, 0.9 km away, is the nearest base and puts you within easy walking distance of the trailhead. Hotel Paun (1.2 km), Apartmani Sara S&S (1.3 km), Monte Casa (1.4 km), and Danica (1.4 km) all sit close enough to make the morning walk to Lučice a relaxed start to the day.
Photography
Shoot from the olive grove line looking down toward the turquoise water at golden hour — the gnarled trunks frame the cove naturally without any infrastructure in the shot. Early morning light on the golden sand before other visitors arrive gives the cleanest, most open compositions of the cove.
Good to know
There is no lifeguard on duty, so swim within your comfort zone and keep an eye on children near the water. The path down is unmarked — look carefully from the Petrovac side or you'll walk straight past the turn-off. Bring everything you need: water, food, and shade gear, because there are no sunbed or umbrella rentals on site. Swimming conditions are generally safe, but the absence of any rescue cover means you're on your own if something goes wrong.
