About

Agios Georgios beach stretches along the northwestern edge of Folegandros, one of the longer beaches on this small Cycladic island. The shore is mixed — a blend of pebbles and coarser sand — lapped by crystal-clear water that shifts from pale aquamarine to deeper blue as you wade in. A whitewashed chapel stands as the beach's quiet landmark, framed by terraced agricultural fields climbing the hillside behind. There's no commercial infrastructure here: no sunbed rental, no beach bar, no kiosk. What you get instead is raw Cycladic coastline, a working agricultural backdrop, and genuine quiet.

How to get there

From Ano Meria village, you can reach the beach either on foot — a moderate hike along a footpath — or by vehicle in around 10 minutes via a rough dirt road suited to 4x4s, ATVs, motorbikes, and standard cars with care. The beach is also reachable by boat. Informal free parking is available along the dirt road at the top. There is no entry fee.

Who it's for

For couples

The absence of commercial infrastructure and the genuine quiet make this a beach for couples who want to be left alone — bring a picnic, find a flat stone, and let the terraced hillside and chapel do the rest.

For families

Families with older children who can manage a pebble shore will enjoy the space and calm atmosphere, but note that the footpath and uneven shore make it unsuitable for pushchairs or visitors with limited mobility, and there are no facilities on-site.

Our take

Agios Georgios is the kind of beach Folegandros does better than almost anywhere in the Cyclades: genuinely undeveloped, quietly beautiful, and easy to have largely to yourself. The mixed shore isn't the softest underfoot, so bring sandals. The north wind is the one variable that can flip a calm day into a rough one fast — if the sea looks agitated, respect it and stay on the stones. Come for the chapel, the terraced backdrop, the silence, and the clear water on a still day. This is not a beach for those who need a sunbed and a cocktail menu. It's for those who don't.— The wmb team

What to do

The Ano Meria Folklore Museum, about 3km away, is a small ethnographic collection documenting traditional Cycladic farming life — worth an hour before or after the beach. Folegandros Chora, 7km south, is a medieval kastro village perched dramatically on a cliff edge and one of the finest in the Cyclades. The hilltop Church of Panagia, visible from the sea at 7.5km, rewards the climb with sweeping views over the island.

Instagram spots

The whitewashed chapel with terraced agricultural fields rising behind it is the signature frame — shoot wide to include both shore and hillside.

The waterline itself rewards a low-angle shot looking along the beach, where the crystal-clear shallows reveal the mixed pebble bottom in sharp detail.

Where to eat

The closest option is To Iliovasílema, a Greek taverna about 1.9km away — your best bet for a post-swim meal. Flora & Mimis and Windmills are both within 2.7km if you want a short drive before eating. Pack a picnic if you plan to stay all day, because the beach itself has no food or drink service.

Where to stay

Notos is the closest place to stay, just 1.4km from the beach. Lemon Tree Houses at 2.1km offers a quieter base, while Provlama Studios at 3.7km and Blue Sand Hotel & Suites at 4.7km give you more options closer to Chora.

Photography

The whitewashed chapel against the terraced hillside is the defining shot — morning light from the east catches the chapel facade cleanly before the sun climbs too high. For water colour, shoot from the shoreline in the late morning when the crystal-clear shallows contrast sharply with the darker blue beyond.

Good to know

Bring everything you need — food, water, shade — because there is nothing for sale at the beach itself. Strong north winds can make the sea rough and swimming conditions unpredictable; check conditions before you wade in, and if the water is churning, stay out. Dogs are welcome with no formal restrictions. The pebble shore and footpath are not accessible for visitors with mobility limitations.

Frequently asked

Swimming is rated moderate. On calm days the crystal-clear water is inviting, but strong north winds can make the sea rough quickly. Always check conditions before entering the water — if the surface is choppy or waves are breaking hard on the pebbles, stay out.
From Ano Meria village you can drive via a rough dirt road in about 10 minutes — a 4x4, ATV, motorbike or careful car will manage it. You can also hike the footpath from Ano Meria, or arrive by boat. Free informal parking is available along the road.
None. There is zero commercial infrastructure at the beach — no bar, no kiosk, no sunbeds. The nearest restaurant is To Iliovasílema, a Greek taverna about 1.9km away. Bring all food, water, and sun protection with you.
June through September is the reliable window, when the Northern Hemisphere temperate climate delivers warm, dry weather. July and August bring the most settled sea conditions, though north winds can still arrive without warning at any point in the season.
Yes. There are no formal restrictions on dogs at this beach, making it one of the more welcoming options on the island for visitors travelling with pets.
No. Both the footpath access and the pebble shore are not accessible for visitors with limited mobility or pushchairs. The rough dirt road approach by vehicle gets you closer, but the beach surface itself remains uneven and difficult to navigate.
The Ano Meria Folklore Museum is 3km away and documents traditional Cycladic farming life. Folegandros Chora, a medieval kastro village, is 7km south. The hilltop Church of Panagia, visible from the sea, is 7.5km away and worth the trip for the views.
