Pede BeachIndonesia Beach Guide
Golden sands, Komodo sunsets, and warungs at dusk

About
Pantai Pede stretches roughly 776 metres along the waterfront of Labuan Bajo, a lively town beach on the island of Pulau Bajo in Flores, Indonesia. Golden sand meets azure water, though the shoreline is a working one — boat traffic passes through and the harbour energy is ever-present. The beach earns its reputation at sunset, when the silhouettes of the Komodo archipelago stack up on the horizon in shades of amber and rose. A strip of warungs lines the back of the beach, making it easy to settle in with a cold drink and watch the sky change colour. It's urban, honest, and best enjoyed for what it actually is: a town beach with a world-class view.
How to get there
Pantai Pede sits right in Labuan Bajo town centre — a five-minute drive from the heart of town, accessible daily by car. Free street parking is available along the waterfront road, so arriving by car is straightforward. Komodo Airport (LBJ) is just 3.1 km away, making for a convenient arrival. Long-distance travellers can also reach Labuan Bajo by ASDP ferry, though the crossing is a substantial journey of around 390 minutes.
Who it's for
For couples
Pantai Pede is a natural choice for couples chasing a dramatic sunset backdrop — grab a warung table, order local food, and watch the Komodo archipelago silhouette deepen against the evening sky. The easy access and lively atmosphere make it a relaxed, no-effort evening out.
For families
The flat, road-level access and basic warung seating make it manageable with children, and the proximity to Labuan Bajo town means facilities are close at hand. Keep children away from the water's edge at all times — boat traffic and strong currents make the water genuinely unsafe.
Our take
Do not come to Pantai Pede to swim — the water is genuinely dangerous, with active boat lanes, strong currents, and jellyfish near the shore, and entering it is inadvisable full stop. Come instead for the sunset, which delivers a legitimately spectacular view: the Komodo archipelago laid out on the horizon, golden sand underfoot, and a cold drink from the warung in hand. This is a town beach in every sense — busy, a little rough around the edges, occasionally littered — and it doesn't pretend otherwise. What it offers is convenience, atmosphere, and a view that punches well above its weight. Use it as your Labuan Bajo base camp: watch the sunset here, then head to the harbour for the evening fish market, and book your Komodo day trip for the morning.
What to do
The beach itself is the stage for Labuan Bajo's famous sunset, and the Komodo archipelago panorama from the shoreline is the main event — arrive early to claim a warung seat. A wooden bridge is a short walk away at around 0.9 km, worth a stroll before the light fades. Labuan Bajo Harbour, just 0.5 km along the waterfront, is the departure point for Komodo National Park liveaboards and day trips, and hosts a lively evening fish market. For a deeper dive into the region, Batu Cermin Cave — a limestone cave with coral fossils embedded in its walls — is only 4 km from the beach.
The classic frame is the sunset panorama looking west from the waterfront, with Komodo archipelago islands layered on the horizon — shoot from the open stretch of golden sand for the widest composition.
The warung strip at dusk offers a more intimate shot: warm light, local colour, and the harbour fading into the background.
Where to eat
The warung strip running behind the beach is the obvious choice: Warung Makan Ibu Asni serves Indonesian food just 0.3 km away, and Warung Warung is another solid local option at 0.8 km. If you want a change of pace, MadeInItaly Ristorante Italiano is 0.6 km away, and The Bottle Cafe and Restaurant offers Indonesian and Asian dishes at 0.9 km. Warung Rahayu rounds out the nearby options at 0.9 km.
Where to stay
Laprima and Plago are both within 0.2 km of the beach — as close as it gets for a waterfront stay in Labuan Bajo. New Bajo is a short walk at 0.3 km, while Bintang Flores and Centro Bajo offer alternatives at 0.5 km and 0.7 km respectively.
Photography
The prime shot is at sunset facing west toward the Komodo archipelago — position yourself along the open waterfront for the best angle. The warung strip at dusk, with the harbour behind, makes for an atmospheric secondary frame.
Good to know
Do not enter the water — boat traffic makes swimming inadvisable, strong currents run through the surrounding waters, and jellyfish and sea urchins have been reported near the shore. After rain, urban runoff affects water quality along this public shoreline, which can also be muddy and littered in places. Respect the warung seating areas: these are working businesses, not free lounging spots, so order something if you sit down. Stay well clear of active boat lanes along the water's edge.
