Cenang Selatan Beach
Langkawi's quieter shore where sunsets steal the show

About
Pantai Chenang Selatan stretches along the Andaman Sea on the western edge of Langkawi, offering white sand and turquoise water without the commercial noise of its famous neighbour to the north. A rocky headland marks the southern boundary, giving the beach a natural, unhurried feel. The Bon Ton Resort coconut grove lines the shore, casting long afternoon shadows across the sand. West-facing and open to the horizon, it catches some of the best sunset light on the island. The vibe here is relaxed — local, unhurried, and refreshingly low-key.
How to get there
Pantai Chenang Selatan is an easy 5-minute drive from Cenang Beach, or a 10-minute walk south along the shoreline from Cenang's southern end — no special gear required. Street parking is available along Jalan Pantai Cenang, and public car parks near Cenang Mall serve the area. There is no entry fee. Langkawi International Airport (LGK) is just 3.9 km away, making this one of the most accessible beaches on the island.
Who it's for
For couples
The quiet atmosphere, coconut grove shade, and unobstructed sunset views make this a natural spot for couples who want scenery without the noise — pack a picnic and claim a patch of white sand before the light fades.
For families
Families can walk here easily from Cenang and enjoy the open shoreline, but keep children well away from the water — swimming is dangerous due to currents and box jellyfish. The nearby Underwater World Langkawi at 1 km is a far safer and more engaging option for kids.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Let's be direct: you come to Pantai Chenang Selatan to look at the water, not to swim in it. Dangerous currents and venomous box jellyfish mean the sea is off-limits, full stop — no exceptions for confident swimmers or calm-looking days. What the beach does offer is genuine: white sand, turquoise water to admire from the shore, a coconut grove that earns its keep at sunset, and a pace of life that feels nothing like the busier strip to the north. It's walkable from Cenang in 10 minutes, which makes it an easy add-on rather than a dedicated trip. Come for the light, the quiet, and the view — and leave the water alone.
What to do
The beach is a short walk from Underwater World Langkawi, a large aquarium about 1 km up the coast — worth an hour if you're travelling with curious minds. Pantai Tengah, a family-oriented beach, sits just 0.5 km north and offers calmer facilities. For a view from above, the Langkawi Cable Car (SkyCab) is 9 km away and gondolas up to the Gunung Mat Cincang summit. Closer in, Nest Rooftop is 0.5 km away for a sundowner with elevation.
The Bon Ton Resort coconut grove at golden hour delivers classic tropical silhouettes against a turquoise Andaman Sea backdrop — arrive 30 minutes before sunset.
The rocky southern headland frames wide-angle shots with natural texture and the open horizon beyond.
Where to eat
A cluster of solid options sits within 0.1 km of the beach: Restaurant Orkid Ria handles fresh seafood, Mumbai Spice and Nasi Kandar Almaz cover Indian cravings, and Yasmin Syrian brings Middle Eastern flavours to the mix. Happy Happy Cenang rounds out the strip for something lighter. Islandish Seafood, just 0.1 km away, is also a laptop-friendly café if you need to recharge between meals.
Where to stay
CASA del MAR is the closest option at just 0.1 km, sitting practically on the doorstep of the beach. Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa is 0.4 km north and offers a more resort-style stay, while Sandy Beach Resort and AB Hotel both sit within 0.5 km for mid-range alternatives. Paretto Seaview Hotel at 0.6 km is a reasonable budget-friendly pick with sea orientation.
Photography
The west-facing shoreline turns golden at sunset — position yourself near the Bon Ton Resort coconut grove for silhouette shots with palm fronds framing the horizon. The rocky southern headland offers strong foreground texture against the turquoise water in the late afternoon light.
Good to know
Do not enter the water. Swimming here is dangerous: strong currents and venomous box jellyfish have been recorded, particularly after storms and during the Southwest monsoon season (May–October) — avoid the beach entirely during those months as seas turn rough. Watch your footing carefully at the rocky southern headland, which is also not wheelchair accessible. Stick to the dry sand, enjoy the sunset, and save your swim for a safer, lifeguarded stretch.
