Mustikkamaa BeachFinland Beach Guide
Helsinki's island sauna beach where locals actually swim

About
Mustikkamaa sits on the island of Norppa in the Finnish Archipelago, just a short hop from central Helsinki, and it feels nothing like a tourist destination. The shore is a mix of golden sand and granite rocky outcrops, with grey Baltic waters lapping at the edge — honest, Nordic, and quietly beautiful. A public outdoor swimming pool sits right on the shoreline, and a sauna complex at the water's edge turns a beach visit into a full Finnish ritual. The roughly 236-metre stretch draws a local rather than tourist visitors, keeping the vibe relaxed even on warm summer days. A bridge connects the island to Korkeasaari, making it easy to combine a beach afternoon with a wander next door.
How to get there
From Helsinki city centre, you can reach Mustikkamaa in about 15 minutes by car, or around 30 minutes by public transport or on foot and by bike — all options run daily. Parking is available directly on the island at Mustikkamaantie 10 and is free, but a parking disc is required for up to 4 hours, so keep one in your car. There is no entry fee to the beach itself, though pool facilities may have their own rules.
Who it's for
For couples
A sauna session followed by a dip in the outdoor pool, then a slow walk across the bridge to Korkeasaari Zoo — it's an unhurried, genuinely local date that feels far removed from the tourist trail.
For families
The outdoor swimming pool on shore gives younger swimmers a safe, contained space to splash around, and the proximity to Korkeasaari Zoo — one of the oldest zoos in the world, just 0.3 km away — means you can easily fill a full day without a car.
Our take
Mustikkamaa is not trying to impress you, and that's exactly what makes it worth visiting. This is where Helsinki residents actually spend their summer — sauna, pool, rocky shore, grey water, no fuss. The golden sand patches soften the granite edges, and the relaxed pace is genuine rather than performed. Swimming is safe and supervised by lifeguards from June through August, but always check the blue-green algae situation before you get in the water — it's a real Baltic summer variable. The bridge to Korkeasaari Zoo and the short distance to Sompasauna mean you can build a full, unhurried day around this small island. The best conditions are during the summer season; facilities close in the colder months, making a visit during that period impractical.
What to do
Sompasauna, a beloved local sauna spot, is just 0.4 km away and pairs perfectly with a Mustikkamaa visit for a full Finnish sauna-and-swim afternoon. The bridge connection to Korkeasaari puts you within easy walking distance of Helsinki Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in the world, sitting just 0.3 km from the beach. If you want to stretch your legs further, the Isoisänsilta bridge is 0.5 km away and offers a pleasant urban waterfront walk back toward the city.
The sauna complex sitting right at the water's edge is the defining shot — frame it with the grey Baltic stretching behind and granite rocks in the foreground.
The outdoor pool on the shoreline offers a uniquely Finnish scene, especially when steam rises on a cool morning early in the season.
Where to eat
For a sit-down meal after the beach, La Bella Trattoria offers Italian food just 0.6 km away, while Putte's and The Butter Boys — both around 0.7 km — cover pizza and sandwiches respectively. If you want something more eclectic, Ravintola Almas at 0.9 km serves pizza, Persian, burger, and kebab, and Himalayan Tandoor at the same distance brings Nepalese flavours to the mix.
Where to stay
The closest upscale option is Waldorf Astoria Helsinki at 2.1 km, with Hilton Helsinki Strand just a little further at 2.2 km. Other nearby options include Noli Katajanokka and Scandic Hakaniemi, both around 2.2–2.3 km from the beach.
Photography
The sauna complex at the water's edge makes for a distinctly Finnish composition — shoot at golden hour when the low Nordic light catches the granite rocks and grey water for maximum atmosphere. The bridge toward Korkeasaari also offers a clean architectural frame with the archipelago stretching behind it.
Good to know
Pool rules apply in the designated swimming pool area — respect the signage and follow instructions from staff. Lifeguards supervise the beach and pool during the summer season from June through August, so swim within those supervised hours when possible. Water quality and blue-green algae levels are monitored throughout summer — check local advisories before you go, as algae blooms can make swimming inadvisable on any given day. Dogs are not permitted in the pool and beach area, so leave them at home.
