Marina Piccola Beach
Capri's iconic cove where limestone meets turquoise sea
About
Marina Piccola Beach sits on Capri's southern shore, a compact ~80-metre stretch of mixed sand and rock framed by one of the Mediterranean's most dramatic backdrops. The turquoise water shifts in colour as the light moves, and directly opposite, the three Faraglioni limestone stacks rise from the sea like sentinels — Capri's most recognisable silhouette. It's a busy beach by any measure, especially in summer, but the setting earns every visitor it pulls in. The romantic vibe is real: the scale is intimate, the views are outsized, and the light in late afternoon turns the whole cove golden. Via Krupp's steep stone staircase descends from above, and the Gardens of Augustus look down over the scene from the clifftop.
How to get there
Marina Piccola has no road access — reach it on foot from Capri Piazzetta via Via Mulo or the steep Via Krupp stone stairs (roughly 15 minutes), or take the hourly bus from Capri Piazzetta (also about 15 minutes). To get to Capri itself, take a ferry from Sorrento or Naples to Marina Grande, then walk or bus to the beach — allow around 45 minutes total from the ferry terminal. Naples International Airport is 38 km away and serves as the primary gateway to the island. There is no parking at or near Marina Piccola, and non-local vehicles are banned on Capri from Easter through mid-November.
Who it's for
For couples
The romantic credentials here are genuine — an intimate 80-metre cove, turquoise water, and the Faraglioni rising straight out of the sea in front of you. Come in June or September when the beach is quieter and the evenings are warm enough to linger.
For families
The rocky entry and dangerous rip currents make this a beach for watching rather than splashing — young children should stay well clear of the water. Families who come for the scenery, the Faraglioni views, and a walk up to the Gardens of Augustus will get more out of it than those expecting a safe swimming beach.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Let's be direct: the water at Marina Piccola is flagged as dangerous, with unpredictable rip currents and rocky entry. That is not a reason to skip the beach — it's a reason to arrive with the right expectations. This is a place to sit, stare, and absorb one of the most photographed views in the Mediterranean, not to swim laps. The Faraglioni opposite are genuinely spectacular, and the scale of the cove — only 80 metres wide — makes the whole scene feel almost theatrical. July and August will test your patience; June and September are the sweet spot. Wheelchair access is impossible given the steep terrain and stone stairs. Come for the view, respect the water, and you'll leave with the best photographs of your trip.
What to do
The Faraglioni Rocks are right in front of you — three iconic limestone sea stacks that are the symbol of Capri and the beach's defining view. A short walk uphill brings you to the Gardens of Augustus, panoramic terraced gardens rated 4.7/5 that look directly down over Marina Piccola and the Faraglioni. Further afield, Villa San Michele (4.7/5, about 1.6 km) and the famous Blue Grotto sea cave — 9.2 km away, where sunlight refracts into an ethereal blue glow — are both worth the effort.
Stand at the water's edge and shoot directly south toward the Faraglioni limestone stacks — the turquoise foreground and the three rising stacks in the background is the definitive Capri frame.
Climb to the Gardens of Augustus for a bird's-eye composition of the entire cove with Via Krupp's zigzagging staircase cutting down the cliff face. The Via Krupp staircase itself, photographed from above or mid-descent, is a striking geometric subject in its own right.
Where to eat
Right at the waterfront, La Canzone del Mare and Mare by Casa Tua are both within 100 metres of the beach and offer the most convenient lunch stops. For something with serious local credentials, Ristorante Pizzeria Verginiello (4.3/5, over 3,500 reviews) is about 700 metres away, and Ristorante Panorama Capri (4.5/5) sits just 800 metres out with views to match its name. Da Paolino and La Fontelina are both around 1.4 km if you want a longer, more leisurely meal after the beach.
Where to stay
Hotel Punta Tragara (4.6/5, 1.3 km) is the closest luxury option to Marina Piccola and sits on the cliffside with direct views of the Faraglioni — it's hard to beat for position. Grand Hotel Quisisana (4.6/5, 0.9 km) is Capri's grande dame, set in the heart of Capri Town and consistently rated among the island's finest stays.
Photography
The best shot on Capri is from Marina Piccola itself looking south toward the Faraglioni stacks — arrive early morning before the beach fills and the light is soft and directional. For an elevated perspective, the Gardens of Augustus viewpoint (700 metres away) frames both the cove and the limestone stacks in a single composition that works best in the golden hour before sunset.
Good to know
Non-resident vehicles are banned on the island from Easter to mid-November, so don't plan to drive — arrive by ferry and use your feet or the bus. The Via Krupp stone stairs can be slippery when wet, so take them slowly and wear shoes with grip. Do not enter the water without caution: unpredictable rip currents and dangerous waves are a genuine hazard here, and rocky entry makes water shoes essential. The beach gets packed in July and August — come in June or September for the same scenery with noticeably fewer visitors.
