Jolly Beach
Antigua's longest white-sand beach, calm and wide open

About
Jolly Beach stretches roughly 2,000 metres along Antigua's southwest coast, making it the longest beach on the island. The sand is white and wide, the water a clear turquoise that stays calm and sheltered — perfect for an easy swim. The beach splits naturally into two zones: the northern section fronts the all-inclusive Jolly Beach Resort, while the southern end remains fully open to the public. Activity levels shift depending on where you plant your towel, from lively resort energy up north to quieter, more open space down south.
How to get there
From Saint John's, you can reach Jolly Beach by bus in about 20 minutes (services run every 10 minutes), by taxi in around 10 minutes, or by car in roughly 25 minutes. Free public parking is available near the Jolly Beach Resort entrance, including a newly constructed area. There is no entry fee to access the public section of the beach.
Who it's for
For couples
The quieter southern end of the beach offers long stretches of white sand and calm turquoise water with room to breathe — ideal for an unhurried afternoon away from the resort zone.
For families
Safe swimming, easy access, free parking, and a flat wide beach make Jolly Beach a genuinely stress-free family day out — the calm sheltered water is forgiving for young swimmers.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Jolly Beach earns its reputation as Antigua's longest beach — 2km of white sand and calm turquoise water is a genuinely hard combination to beat on this island. Swimming is safe, access is easy, and the free parking situation is straightforward. Know the rules before you arrive: the northern half belongs to the resort, and sunbeds there are not for public use. Head south and you'll find wide open space without the friction. Skip September and October — hurricane season is real, and some facilities won't be running. Come between November and April for the best of what this beach does well.
What to do
Jolly Harbour Marina is just 1km away, a large yacht marina with restaurants and shops worth a wander. About 3km down the coast, Darkwood Beach offers a quieter alternative with sea grape shade and views toward Montserrat. If you want to venture further, Fort Barrington sits 7.3km away and rewards the trip with historical context and elevated coastal views.
The southern public end of the beach gives you the full 2km white-sand panorama with turquoise water and no resort infrastructure in frame — best shot just after sunrise.
The Jolly Beach Resort frontage to the north provides a classic Caribbean all-inclusive backdrop, strongest in warm late-afternoon light.
Where to eat
Sandy's Beachbar is the closest option at just 0.3km, ideal for a drink or a bite without straying far from the sand. Bodog Beach Club (formerly Castaways), about 0.4km away, offers Indian and regional cuisine. For Italian, Melini's is 0.5km from the beach and rounds out a solid lineup of nearby dining.
Where to stay
Jolly Beach Hotel sits practically on the doorstep at 0.1km, making it the most convenient base. Coco's Hotel at 0.4km and Sugar Ridge Hotel at 0.7km offer alternatives with a little more distance from the beach action. For something more secluded, Tamarind Hills (2km) and Hermitage Hotel (2.4km) are both within easy reach.
Photography
The early morning light hits the white sand and turquoise water from the south end of the beach at its best — arrive before 8am for clean, uncluttered shots with the full 2km sweep behind you. The resort frontage to the north makes a strong compositional backdrop in the golden hour before sunset.
Good to know
The northern half of the beach is managed by Jolly Beach Resort — sunbeds there are reserved for resort guests only, so don't settle in expecting free use of them. Public access is guaranteed on the southern section, which is also the quieter end. The northern end near the resort tends to be busier, so head south if you want more space. Avoid visiting in September and October — it's hurricane season, some resort facilities close, and conditions can be unsettled.
