Ħondoq ir-Rummien Beach
White sand, turquoise water, Comino right on your doorstep

About
Hondoq ir-Rummien sits at the southeastern tip of Gozo, a compact bay where white sand and pebble meet turquoise water with startling clarity. The sheltered southeast aspect keeps the surface calm on most summer days, and the view straight across to Comino's Blue Lagoon is as good as it gets without actually being there. A concrete boat launch ramp divides the beach, a reminder that this is a working bay as much as a sunbathing spot. The setting is relaxed and family-oriented, with moderate visitor numbers that keep it from feeling overwhelmed — though it's no secret.
How to get there
From Qala village it's a five-minute drive down a paved road to a small free car park right at the bay. If you're without a car, take the bus to the Kuncizzjoni stop in Qala and walk down — allow around 20 minutes on foot. There is no entry fee. Before you go, check whether illegal concrete boulders are currently blocking beach access, as this has been an issue and the situation can change.
Who it's for
For couples
The calm, sheltered water and direct sightline to Comino make this a quietly romantic spot — hire a private boat from the ramp and you can have the Blue Lagoon crossing almost to yourselves in the early morning.
For families
Safe swimming conditions, easy paved access, free parking, and a moderate pace make Hondoq ir-Rummien one of Gozo's more practical family beaches — just remember dogs aren't allowed in summer, and keep children well away from the active boat launch ramp.
Our take
Feet in the sand, eyes on the screen
Hondoq ir-Rummien is safe for swimming under normal summer conditions, but boat traffic in the bay is real — stay aware and keep distance from the launch ramp. Beyond that caveat, this is one of Gozo's most rewarding small bays: white sand, turquoise water, a direct view to Comino, and a free car park two minutes' walk away. The contested history around marina development and boulder-blocked access gives it a slightly unresolved edge, so check current conditions before you commit to the drive. Come in June or early September if you want the water without the peak-summer pace. It won't disappoint on a clear morning.
What to do
The bay is a natural departure point for private boat trips across to Comino's Blue Lagoon, just 2.5 km away — one of the most photographed stretches of turquoise water in the Mediterranean. Snorkelers will find clear water and rocky edges worth exploring, and the nearby Santa Marija Reef and Santa Marija Caves dive sites (under 2 km away) are accessible via Bejn Il-Kmiemen, a local dive operator 1.6 km from the beach. For a half-day excursion inland, the UNESCO-listed Ġgantija Temples are about 7 km away, and the Victoria Citadel offers panoramic views of Gozo from 9 km.
Stand at the waterline on the eastern side of the bay and shoot across the turquoise water toward Comino — on a clear day the Blue Lagoon is visible in the frame.
The boat launch ramp at golden hour gives an authentic, textured foreground against the white sand and pebble beach that stands apart from the usual postcard angle.
Where to eat
The closest dining options are back up in Qala and the surrounding area. Xerri il-Bukkett and Kaputa (good for pizza) are both around 1.2 km away, while D-Bar and Ta' Vestru sit at roughly 1.3 km. Il Wileġ Restaurant, serving Mediterranean food, is 1.6 km from the bay. There are no food vendors on the beach itself, so bring water and snacks for a long session.
Where to stay
Lellux Bed and Breakfast is the closest option at 1.3 km, well-placed for early morning visits before the day-trippers arrive. The Grand Hotel and Quantin Boutique Hotel are both within 2.5 km, offering more facilities while keeping you close to the southeast Gozo coastline. Gozovigliando B&B, about 3.4 km out, is worth considering if you want a quieter rural base.
Photography
The best shot at Hondoq ir-Rummien is from the water's edge looking northwest — frame the turquoise bay with Comino visible in the background, ideally in the soft light of early morning before boats start moving. Late afternoon light catches the white sand and pebble beautifully from the eastern end of the beach, with the boat ramp adding an honest, unpolished foreground.
Good to know
Boat traffic moves through the bay regularly, so stay alert when swimming and keep clear of the launch ramp area. Dogs are not permitted on the beach from June through September — leave them at your accommodation on summer visits. The beach is best avoided between November and February when winter swells expose the bay and facilities are minimal. Verify access conditions locally before making the trip, as the boulder-blocking issue has affected entry in the past.
