About

Hamdeok Seouobong Beach sits on the northern coast of Jeju Island, where white sand meets exceptionally clear, shallow turquoise water in a sheltered bay. The grass-covered volcanic headland of Seouobong rises at one end, giving the whole scene a scale and texture you won't find at a flat resort beach. At roughly 224 metres long, it's compact enough to feel intimate yet draws a steady stream of visitors thanks to its easy access from Jeju City — just 20 minutes by car. A paved café strip lines the back of the beach, and the shallow bay makes the water glow an almost unreal turquoise on sunny mornings.

How to get there

From Jeju City, drive north and you'll reach the beach in about 20 minutes; buses run hourly and take around 25 minutes. Coming from Seongsan, allow 40 minutes by car or roughly 50 minutes by bus. Free parking is available in multiple lots nearby, but arrive early on summer weekends — they fill quickly.

Who it's for

For couples

The Seouobong coastal trail at sunset gives couples a rare elevated perspective over the glowing turquoise bay, well away from the café strip energy below. It's a short walk with a big payoff.

For families

The exceptionally clear, shallow bay is the main draw for families — children can wade far out and still be visible from the shore. The flat beach approach and paved promenade make it easy to manage with young kids or a stroller.

Our take

Hamdeok Seouobong is one of the most photogenic and accessible beaches on Jeju, and it knows it. The white sand and turquoise water are the real deal — not a postcard exaggeration — and the Seouobong headland hike at 0.3 km elevates the visit from 'nice beach day' to something with genuine drama. Swimming is safe inside the buoy-marked zone, and the shallow bay is forgiving for all ages. That said, be honest with yourself about timing: July and August turn this place into a wall-to-wall scene, and the café strip has become heavily commercialized since 2022. Come in June or September, get here before the daytrippers, and you'll see exactly why this beach has become iconic on the island.— The wmb team

What to do

The Seouobong headland viewpoint is just 0.3 km away — a grass-covered volcanic trail that rewards you with aerial views straight down into Hamdeok Bay, and it's the single best thing to do after a swim. About 9.6 km east, Manjanggul Lava Tube is a UNESCO-listed cave stretching 7.4 km underground, one of the longest lava tubes in the world and well worth the short drive. If you want something slower, a Jeju Tangerine Farm visit at roughly 9.9 km gives you a grounded sense of the island's agricultural identity.

Instagram spots

The Seouobong headland trail at 0.3 km delivers the classic overhead shot — turquoise water, white sand, and the curved bay all in one frame.

Down at beach level, the volcanic headland as a backdrop against the shallow turquoise water photographs best in the hour after sunrise, before the beach fills.

Where to eat

Dolgorae and Bbobbai are both within 0.1 km of the beach — close enough to walk back from the water still dripping. If you want something more substantial, Burger 307 is 0.3 km away and Purdak chicken is 0.4 km, making post-swim meals easy to sort without a car.

Where to stay

Ocean Grand Hotel is the closest option at 1.4 km, putting you within easy walking distance of the beach. If you prefer to base yourself in Jeju City, Ramada City Hall and Hotel Stay Hyun are both under 14 km away, with regular bus connections back to Hamdeok.

Photography

Shoot from the Seouobong headland trail at 0.3 km for elevated views of the turquoise bay and white sand below — early morning light keeps the water colour cleanest before the beach fills. At ground level, the volcanic headland framing the far end of the bay makes a strong foreground anchor for wide shots from the waterline.

Good to know

Stay inside the designated swimming zone marked by buoys — it exists for your safety, not decoration. Camping is not permitted anywhere on the beach. July and August bring peak visitor numbers that make the bay genuinely packed and the café strip heavily commercialized; if you can, visit in June or September instead. The flat beach approach and paved promenade along the café strip make this one of the more accessible beaches on Jeju.
