About

Bãi Cát Cò 2 sits on Đảo Cát Bà in the Gulf of Tonkin, carved into a sheltered cove between limestone promontories that separate it from its busier neighbour, Cat Co 1. At roughly 229 metres long, the beach offers white sand underfoot and turquoise water ahead — compact, calm, and easy to read in a single glance. A steep staircase is your gateway in, and that small effort is exactly what keeps the numbers moderate. Resort development has crept in from the eastern end, but the western stretch still breathes. The vibe here is relaxed — flip-flops, a book, and nowhere urgent to be.

The MOOVSWELL of Cát Cò 2 Beach

The moment after.

MOOVSWELL is a state of mind. The wave is the action, the rush; right after comes the calm, the breath, that moment where you slow down and find your balance again. This score measures what a beach does to you in that very moment.

How to get there

From Cat Ba Town you can walk here in about 12 minutes, hop on a motorbike in 5, or take an electric car in just 3 minutes — all routes run daily. There is no parking at the beach itself, so leave any vehicle in Cat Ba Town and continue on foot. An entry fee is required to access the beach; bring cash as a precaution. Resort guests hold priority on the eastern loungers, so if you're arriving independently, head west.

Who it's for

For couples

The sheltered cove shape and moderate visitor numbers make Cat Co 2 one of the quieter spots on Cat Ba for an unhurried afternoon together — white sand, turquoise water, and limestone walls on three sides doing most of the work.

For families

Easy access from Cat Ba Town in minutes, calm cove swimming (outside jellyfish season), and a relaxed pace make this a manageable beach day with kids — just note the steep staircase on arrival and the no-glass rule, and plan around the June-to-August jellyfish window.

Our take

Cat Co 2 is the quieter, slightly scrappier sibling of Cat Co 1 — and that's precisely its appeal. The steep staircase filters out the casual daytrippers, the cove shape keeps the water calm, and 229 metres of white sand doesn't take long to feel like yours. Be honest about the trade-offs: resort encroachment on the eastern end is real, the public strip is under pressure, and July and August bring both jellyfish and peak resort saturation — skip those months without hesitation. Come between November and April for dry skies and the best swimming window. It won't dazzle you with scale, but it delivers exactly what it promises: a relaxed limestone cove a short walk from town, without the shoulder-to-shoulder scene next door.— The wmb team

What to do

A viewpoint over the bay sits just 0.6 km away and rewards the short walk with sweeping karst panoramas. Cat Ba National Park, a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve covering 17,000 hectares of tropical forest and marine habitat, is about 5 km from the beach and worth at least a half-day. Lan Ha Bay — a karst seascape of 400-plus limestone islands and considerably less visited than Ha Long Bay — is only 3 km out and accessible by boat excursion. History seekers should make time for Hospital Cave (Hang Quân Y), a three-storey wartime hospital hidden inside a limestone cave used during the Vietnam War, roughly 4 km away.

Instagram spots

The steep staircase descent gives you a bird's-eye shot of the white sand and turquoise cove before you even reach the beach — grab it on the way down in morning light.

The limestone promontory separating this cove from Cat Co 1 frames the water against raw karst rock for a shot that reads nothing like a generic beach postcard.

Where to eat

Oasis 2 Restaurant is the closest option at 0.4 km, a practical first stop after you climb back up the staircase. Green Mango and Secret Garden are both around 0.7 km away and offer a slightly broader sit-down experience. If you're after plant-based food, CELERY Vegan Restaurant is 0.6 km from the beach — same distance as the cheerfully named Chip Restaurant Green Bamboo Forest.

Where to stay

Hung Long Harbour Hotel is the nearest base at 0.4 km, putting you within easy walking distance of the beach each morning. Draco QK3 Hotel and Tang Tien Hotel are both around 0.5 km away, while Hailong Hotel and Tien Thang Hotel sit at 0.6 km — all in Cat Ba Town and all reachable on foot.

Photography

The limestone promontory that divides Cat Co 2 from Cat Co 1 makes a dramatic natural frame — shoot from the western end of the beach in the soft morning light before the sun climbs high. For an elevated perspective, the viewpoint over the bay at 0.6 km gives you the full cove shape, the turquoise water, and the karst backdrop in a single composition.

Good to know

No glass is permitted on the beach — leave bottles behind before you descend the staircase. Jellyfish are reported in the water from June through August, so check locally before swimming during those months and exercise real caution. The public strip has been narrowing due to resort expansion on the eastern end, so arrive early to secure a good spot on the open section. July and August combine jellyfish risk with resort peak pressure — those two months are best avoided altogether.

Frequently asked

Swimming is rated moderate. The sheltered cove keeps conditions generally calm, but jellyfish are reported in the water from June through August — check with locals before entering during those months. Outside that window, the turquoise water is suitable for most swimmers. The beach has no adapted or lifeguard facilities, so exercise normal caution.
You have three options from Cat Ba Town: walk in about 12 minutes, take a motorbike in around 5 minutes, or ride an electric car in just 3 minutes — all run daily. There is no parking at the beach itself, so leave any vehicle in town and continue on foot or by one of those short-hop options.
Avoid July and August. Jellyfish are reported in the water from June through August, and resort pressure peaks in July and August, narrowing the public strip significantly. The wet season runs May through October, so if you want dry weather and calmer conditions, aim for November through April — the beach's best window.
No. Dogs are not typically permitted on managed concession beaches in Vietnam, and Bãi Cát Cò 2 is no exception. Leave pets at your accommodation.
Access involves a steep staircase, and there are no adapted facilities at the beach. Visitors with limited mobility should factor this in before making the trip. The electric car from Cat Ba Town (a 3-minute ride) gets you close, but the staircase descent to the sand remains unavoidable.
There are several restaurants within easy reach. Oasis 2 Restaurant is the closest at 0.4 km. CELERY Vegan Restaurant and Chip Restaurant Green Bamboo Forest are both 0.6 km away. Green Mango and Secret Garden are 0.7 km out. Bring water and snacks to the beach itself rather than relying on on-sand vendors.
Three rules matter: an entry fee is required to access the beach, so bring cash; no glass is allowed on the sand; and resort guests have priority on the eastern loungers. If you're visiting independently, head to the western section of the 229-metre beach for the best chance of a free spot.
